Since my intake is an older one and it appears to of have a burst panel vs pop off valves are there any advantages to either one? I'm leaning toward the idea of pop off valves, but is there anything i should know about the burst panels? http://www.racecarparts.com/Small_Block_Chevy.html toward the bottom of the page....
I had a pop off on my 671 ..I have no idea if I ever blew it open but I never had any trouble from it.
The difference between the two is MONEY. A good pop off can be bought for 50-70 dollars. A burst panel retail for 70-160 bucks. Any pics of the manifold? BTW. What are you building? You might get better feedback.
It's a 50 / 50 call ... you can buy the both for the same http://boostdaddy.com/blowermanifoldaccessories.aspx
If it's a street/race fun car, go with the pop off. If it's full on race (serious) go with the burst panel
The burst panels have a finite life span. After a certain amount of cycles they will weaken and therefore will burst at a lower boost. Likewise the springs on the pop off valve will also, but not very quickly. What is your intended application? I've some people stack the burst panels, where they have a space between them, and by having a spacer with an access fitting between them they can "lightly pressurize between them to check if the inner panel is still intact. If there is a failure, don't worry it bursts both panels.
Put on a regular pop off valve. As stated, burst panels aren't long lived. They were required for racing because of unrestricted area and the force required to burst it. Why would you put anything on a street car that required continuous replacement? If that panel breaks running down the road, you're about to be walking.
Pop off for sure on anything but a full on race car. I installed a wieand pop off on a manifold that had provisions for neither. The first time I fired the engine up I saw it work while I was trying to get the timing right. I thought to myself "well, that was worth it."
you're talking about this intake http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=402313 right? I guess you could make a piece of 1/4" aluminum to bolt over the burst panel hole and put a pop off valve in that?
that's the one. I'm thinking just a plate and putting a pop off valve into it. I was guessing a burst panel wasn't a good idea for a street car, and you guys kinda confirmed what i was thinking
It may be crude but I took a piece of aluminum plate and two valve springs and made my own "sneeze plate" for my blown six. I had to make the manifold and just cut a small hole in the side that I bolted this piece over. It works, while I was trying to get the timing right, it popped several times, reseated and I kept on driving. Several times it blew part of the gasket off, but would seat enough for me to get it home and replace it. Robert.
Make your own pop off valve , 2 1/4 in aluminum plates, one with a hole , 1 o ring & 4 light springs , 4 bolts & lock nuts
