We are two hundred miles from home on vacation and the car has started blowing the fuse to the ac compressor. I think the clutch is about to go out but I don't know for sure. If I install the factory 10amp fuse it blows in less than 1 min. I tried a 15 amp fuse and it seemed to be okay for the 5 mins I ran it. Will it be completly unsafe to drive home with the wrong fuse. It's a long drive with a 15month old and no a/c. But i don't want to cause a fire. Better to be hot than crispy
You can get a cumulative voltage drop going thru the on-off switch, t-stat control, binary switch, wiring connectors, & all that. Which means it'll try to over amp to compensate. So, out here where it routinely gets 110 deg. plus it is common to use a universal relay, inside fender mounted, with a dedicated circuit breaker to power the clutch. At least thats what we do on class 8 heavy trucks & Ag. equip.
The initial draw to get it going is what's popping the fuse. Amperage to KEEP it on is low. You can probably get by with a Slo-Blo fuse. One that will let the initial hi draw happen without blowing, only blow if it is continuous hi draw.
