on one of the tech week posts, someone off-handedly mentioned that a BMW 2002 steering box will work for cowl steering. i actually think i found one, and i was wondering if it has to be reversed. also, what other kind of mods will need to be made. i haven't seen it yet, so i have no idea what it looks like. any tips would be helpful.

They work out very well. They do not need reversed. They are also a pretty wide box too, so you don't need to modify the box of lengthen the shaft of any craziness either. In a narrow car like a model t or a they will place the wheel in a good spot in the dash as it is.

I believe the correct bmw box is a 68-74 2002 manual box. If you can pick one up reasonable, buy it. The were real cheap, seems they are bringing a decent dollar now though. My dad sold one on "that auction site" recently, and it closed at about $165:eek:

Not great pics, but here are a couple to give you an idea of what they look like

You're welcome, glad it helped. I think there are a couple threads on here that could be searched that show builds using this box too.

And, even though Florida is a long commute, I'll come & roll around in the weeds under a bmw this weekend if your name is, oh, lets say "Carmen Electra" :D
