Good point... Whats the chances you haven't heard of the Ventures AND haven't seen Pulp Fiction? Surf Rider, the "main" PF song (other than Miserlou at the beginning, of course) was originally a Ventures song... It wasn't them doin' it on the soundtrack, I wanna say it was Link Wray or the Lively Ones or somethin' like that, but it was the Ventures first. Like someone else said, they're songs are in a GAZILLION movies.

Just like punk bands, their songs are covered by 100's of bands, and they played covers of at least dozens of songs... And they put the same songs on multiple albums (I have 2 or 3 of the same version of same song by same band from lots of bands I like).

Ventures Live, The first album I ever purchased and paid for it with my lawn mowing money!
Does anybody know if they helped design the Moserite guitars they played. I remember seeing one at a music store as a kid and looking at it like it posessed some kind of magical power!

I am 26 and loved The Ventures when I first heard them on an oldies station I must have been single digit aged then. I love their music and it's ability to take you somewhere without words.
I was blown away one day when I found a set of like 3 Ventures CD's at Costco I begged my dad to buy it, I don't think he really knew them but, luckily it was cheap so it was easy to convince him. Now he puts it on in the garage too.

  6. Thanks for posting the pic of the Mosrite. Cool guitars, for sure...

They never recorded "car music" and actually never produced a car album. The album "Ventures in Space" was excellent, and i wore a hole through that LP, but there wasn't one single car/Hot Rod song on there.

Technically they were never considered to be a Surf band , but more of an instrumental band.

We're adding "Walk Don't Run" to our Set List for This Saturday.

  10. This is true ... but you have to admit that there's something about their music that made it "fit" into the hot rod scheme of things. :)

In 1963, the Mosrite Ventures model instruments were put into production at a new facility, in Bakersfield, Ca, that was funded by the Ventures. The deal with Semie Mosley, Mosrite owner, was that the band would retain exclusive distribution on the Mosrite Mk-1 Ventures models. Mosrite, unfortunately, closed its doors in 1969. I played a Mosrite Ventures model bass for a while, in the early 70s. It was a great sounding, pro instrument, but boy was it heavy!
Like the Ventures themselves, the instruments they endorsed were also copied. Univox corp. made many mid-level copies of name brand instruments from the late 60s through the 70s. Out of all this production, the copies they made of the Mosrite Ventures Model, called Hi-Flyer by Univox, is the only one that generates much collector interest today. Kinda fitting, I would think. Once again, RIP Bob Bogle...and thanks for the memories.

Indeed, I let their influence show in some of my hot rod music (that I'll be playing at MoKan). I just can't watch dragsters without hearing those guitars in my head. Blame Hollywood for that I guess, but it seems so natural...

The point is, that Ventures music brings back a flood of good time memories of the cars we had and the things we did with them. Maybe it's just an "Old Farts" thing, but it shouldn"t be.

Thanks for the info Vertible. I remember seeing the Ramones for the first time and Johnny Ramone was playing a Mosrite.

Last year I got to go see Nokie Edwards (one of the guitarists for the ventures) play in a small theater close to my home town. It was really cool to see him play all the old ventures songs. He was also inducted into the rock-n-roll hall of fame. shorthly after that show.

I already poster on this thread but forgot to add this. It's maybe a bit OT but I assume anyone here has a bit of an affinity for so called "Surf Music" which here in SO CAL was always linked to car culture. If so, check out "Los Tiki Phantoms" they are a band from Spain and they are REALLY good. Their album "Regresan de la Tumba" is excellent and when I listen to it , it takes me right back to Harmony Park Ballroom, Dick Dale, Ventures etc. They also have some good videos on their website.

Intro to "The Swinging Creeper" has a car hitting the go pedal. I think that counts.

They weren't a surf band either, is right. I explain The Ventures like this:

When Jan and Dean, The Beach Boys, and others were singing songs about racing, surfing, hotrodding, dancing, girl fondling, and more racing for the nation to enjoy, The Ventures was the music of choice for the guys that were actually doing all the racing, surfing, hotrodding, dancing and girl fondling. lol.

These guys along with Dick Dale and The Deltones were flatout cool! What a loss.

Very sad indeed. I learned how to play guitar off of Ventures songs played to me by my father when I was little. My Dad was a big fan of those guys and the Fireballs. He was in a band in Highschool in the late 60's and those were the types of songs they played. R.I.P.

Hey Axle, you should check out their version of The Duals "Stickshift". It's on a CD called "In The Vaults Volume 2" on Ace records and it has great car noises and finishes with a comedy crash kinda like "Transfusions".

These guys were definitely one of the cornerstones of my rock and roll awakening in 1962, the same year I discovered cars and oval track auto racing! I had every album they put out (up to around 1972), most bought through the "Columbia Record Club". When I was off in New Zealand and Australia in 1969/70, my Mom even bought their then-current new album so I wouldn't miss it! Sorely reget never seeing them live. Finally bought an electric six string a couple of years ago and plan to take serious lessons when my AV8 is finished. That said, I still studied enough tablature so I can at least hammer out a goodly portion of "Caravan"! Godspeed Mr. Bogle! You and your bandmates will always be solid gold in my heart!

Exactly, and the reason why other vintage Rock & Roll threads shouldn't be removed so quickly. That is actually my point.
