Thanx guys for the kudos, It was a great opening :).
I have been there everyday for 2weeks. Some of you guys passed right by and I was in stealth mode looking like a Car Hop mgr.
I have something to prove to Jim here by keeping and eye on the canopy and having our Weds nite cruises, just like we had back in the 80's when I got to hang there with my 1st Hot Rod.
We just have to make sure that the canopy can turn a $ as it is the only way that the girls make their dough. If ya come to hang for awhile park in an open spot on the right of the canopy, wall side or in the big parking lot where we had the show. If it's not close enough, when a closer spot opens up,grab it then. If your there for car service, let the girls know and they'll hang a tray.
Jim needs to see that we are patrons as well so lets show him that we're here to do so.
Mel's closure: Y'know, I waited with anticipation for the opening of the former Parasol as a Mel's. I visited it being rebuilt much like I did The Broiler. Adriene and the Friends Of The Parasol worked very hard to take on this issue. Century National Properties holds the ownership on the property. The rent on that building is extremely high The Mel's lease was signed at the time when Commercial Real Estate had increased by 25%.
I was there the day it opened and even the day b4 by invite. Burny met me there and we discussed the Broiler. I met with Steve Weiss=Owner of Mel's to discuss the possibility of his interest in the Broiler. The Pro's was that the Broiler had a history. It was a "REAL" Drive-In and could be rebuilt as a Mel's Drive-In with a "true working car canopy", The Con's was it was 3/4 of the way dozed and it would take alot of dough to get it back.
His reply to me was something like "it was not our kind of place or not in the right demographrics". I became offended by that statement, but kept that to myself until now. I have always wished Steve and Partners Gabriel Mendez and Donald Wagstaff well with their Seal Beach-Los Alamitos venture and knew over a year and 1/2 ago that it was available.
A gentleman attempted to cut a deal w/CNP but they never got to the end. That gentleman ended up buying Jim's Westco BBB and he's doing just fine.

The day Mel's opened they ran out of grub and had to close at 9pm. I was hoping that they'd be there for many years to come,I patronized them as often as I could when down that way and hope that perhaps a Bob's gets in there as well.

Just got back from the Broiler Cruise. Had a great time. Great showing of cars and car hops stayed busy all night. Just as I was about to leave for the night I ran across Cyclone Kevin. We started chatting about cars and the Broiler and Tiki Diablo joins in. We sat under the canopy of the Broiler with me in my roadster, Kevin on the front tire and Tiki Diablo on the rear talking for several hours. Next to eating at the Broiler with the family, talking with Cyclone Kevin and Tiki Diablo was the highlight of the night for me.

Thanks Kevin for all the effort you guys put into restoring the Broiler. It was quite magical being under the canopy lit up by the neon lights in a hot rod. Thank you.

Last night was GREAT!!! What a blast!! The place looks amazing and I can't wait to go back!!

Was great seeing everyone last night too! Saw a few people I hadn't seen in a long while and saw a few people from the HAMB that I had not had a chance to meet, until last night!

Kevin, and everyone involved have done such a great thing here!!

Like an idiot, I forgot to bring my camera last night. Glad a few of you got some pictures of the fun!

  18. Great time. Parked in the hop, ate in the car. Burger, onion rings and choco shake and my lovely wife slid up close to me on the couch of a seat in the Merc- Just about perfect. It was great catching up with peeps and meeting a few new. Looks like everyone was having a great time. The place, as it stands alone, in the daytime, looks sweet, but at night all lit up with the parking lot packed with all sorts of vintage machines, it's just awesome! Way to go Kevin. Thanks for all your hard work.

    Now where's the pictures, Bob?

I swung by my Moms house and picked her up for a surprise dinner. She had no idea we were headed to the Broiler until we came around the bend and saw the lights and all the cars. She used to cruise there (actually got a ticket in the parking lot) back in the day. When we ate inside with Bad Bob and 1oldtimer she told me that was the first time she had ever been inside the building. When she used to cruise there she always ate in the car...LOL. The school girl smile on my Moms face was worth a billion bucks.....THANKS GUYS !!!

Had a great time! Ate in the Car Hop. Brought my brother with me in the Coupe.
We both hadn't been to the Broiler together since we were kids.

Awesome evening, you had to be there to believe it, and now we need to keep the momentum going every week - just one question: the token black Escalade showed but Bad Bod did not park next to it even though the only free parking spot was right beside it. Why not?
