I am going to have to get into body work soon so I have been picking up tools here and there. So far I have three different hammers and dolly that looks like comma. I will post a pic tonight when I get home. What else should I be looking to get? I have a book that lays out the basics of beating on metal-fortunately, I don't have anything super serious to repair. Thanks, Mike
In addition to those mentioned by others, I regularly use a toe dolly, heel dolly and an egg dolly. I'm a fan of Martin brand for body hammers and dollies.
Here are a hammer and dolly I grabbed at the swap meet this last weekend. The hammer is vintage blue point. The other hammers are similar but one has the little pyramid type teeth on it. Other faces are either flat or have slight curves to them.
The hammer with teeth is a shrinking hammer. I have never used on so can't provide any input on the usefulness of that. They seem to be one of those tools that people either love or despise. You will definitely want a hammer with some crown to the face (sounds like you may have one). Completely flat hammers can be tricky to use without leaving marks in the metal and are virtually useless for working an inside curve.
Shrinking hammers are gimmicks in my worthless opinion. ya need: Body hammer with a pic Body hammer with a chisel Add a rairoad, toe and heel dolly to go with your comma dolly. A broke piece of leaf spring A chunk of railroad track Some ball peen hammers Blocks of wood Couple of pics Busted screw drivers Dull knife Tire tool Brake spoon
Making your own tools from stuff in the shop, done lots of body work with nothing more than a 3# chisel sledge and a couple ball pien hammers
