I've got an old Mor-Drop axle and some 39 Ford bones to go on my Model A Coupe. Here's how to split the bones and make them look like they were made that way. Here are the bones in their original state. Note the spring in front of the axle. That'll have to go. I used a cut-off saw to cut the yoke just above the welds. 39 bones are much stronger than Model A bones. That leaves you with 2 workable pieces. Next we get rid of those ugly spring in front hangers. Again with the cut-off saw. We'll have to grind the tops flat and round the ends too. Hangars whacked off. Trial fit on the dropped axle. Yes I know the axle's backwards. Time to break out the grinder, Flatten the tops and round those ends.
Another look at the grinder work. Then we got lazy. Instead of cutting the back end down to fit around an old tie rod, we just welded in those nifty bungs from Speedway. 11/16" Rt hand thread Ford Tie Rod ends screw right in. A little finish clean up and that's it.
LOL, actually, brought them in for the pics. We did the welding and grinding at Roger's shop. Got them home and the 50MPH wind rattles the garage door so loud you can't hear yourself think. Didn't wanna trust this to my little 110 Craftsman mig. His welder on the other hand could weld 2 battleships together! But, you'd be surprised what's been rebuilt in this living room. This is easy tech, why isn't it on page 12 yet? It's been up a couple hours already!
I just did the same thing with '38 bones. I bought long perch pins and lower shock mounts from Speedway. Apparently their long perches are the length for Model A bones or hairpins, they only leave about 5 threads below the shock mounts. I may have to grind the top of the bone and re-bore the tapered hole. Have you run into this? Those '39 bones look to be the same thickness as my '38's. I also need to use a thin spacer (washer) where the Model A axle boss is a bit shorter than the distance between perch holes on the bone. Thanks for the post.
I ordered the same stuff from Speedy Bill that you did. We'll see what it looks like when it gets here. I think the slotted lower shock mount is the same one Pete & Jakes make. If the perches from Speedway don't work, I'll go with the ones from Pete & Jakes. I used those on my 32 with hairpins and they worked great. Another option is to use the shock mounts that mount to the axle. Either saw off the end and weld the bung to the perch boss like A-V8 did in his book or drill thru the axle just outside the perch boss and mount them there. I don't know where to get that style of lower shock mount/bung tho. Anybody? Oops, just looked at the last pic again. Please ignore that heart shaped box and the******** on the chair. That was un-intended tech!
