Bringing it back up for anybody who's missed seeing this. I started buying car mags in '62 when I was 10 years old,and didn't start collecting the older ones til the mid 70s.My first big score of little books had the original articles on Doug's car.I must have stared at the pics for days.
Absolutely beautiful lines. Not surprised how many dig this car.
When I hit the lottery,I'm going looking for that coupe.

    Was it the Bonneville Boomer
    or Bonneville Bomber?
I thought I saw it called Boomer one time.

I was sacred to chop my 39 but I think it needs it now.

That car has made the car show rounds for awhile up in the Seattle area. It was at Good Guys this year and I've seen it at other shows in the past. Probably the one of the very few chopped 39/40s I like. It's an icon up in the PNW.

  7. Yes I have seen the photos of it in kind of recent shows up in Washington and it looked great,I have even posted on some of those old threads BUT....... to see this car with a fresh restoration and to see it on the salt is a whole different story. All kustoms look great on the salt but to see a kustom that raced back in the day is magical to me,there hasnt been a kustom on this level that was also a race car that was DRIVIN to Bonneville since this one and probably never will be.

I took my my youngest son (27) to Bonneville this year for his first time. He was driving me nuts saying how he just has to have a rat rod to drive down here next year with his friends. He liked the nice hot rods, but he really liked this ugly *** model a (LOL, I wont say anything more just in case it is a board members) Im pretty sure its not though since Ive never seen it posted here before.

Any way, when he saw this beautiful custom I think he died and went to heaven. Every time we came across it the few days we were there he just couldnt say enough good things about it, and now a car like this is on his wish list instead of a rat.

    There is hope =)

Theres another one in Minnisota- very simalar build style. Somewhere I saw a picture of the two together. People always fall in love with a good looking custom-It changes their perspectives to wanting a one.

  11. Now that is a great story.

It was on the cover of the December 1953 issue of R&C... small photo, but it is a cover car...

Despite the small photo on the cover it had a full two spread article inside.

This great photo of it was used in one of the fantastic Don Montgomery books

  16. I now have a serious "want face" looking at the coupe....and the RPU on the cover ain't to shabby either

  17. Well you're right Rik it does say that on the site, that is the first time I have ever seen it called the Boomer but it does say that.

Wow glad to see this back on the salt. One of my all time favorites. Kudos to the owner for actually driving it out there instead of having it cooped up in a museum somewhere.

Thanks Piero. Would have loved to get that thing out in the open for more pics. Some times you just gotta take what you can get.

There was a very similar '39 Coupe at the West Coast Kustoms show in Los Banos, just before they moved the show to Paso Robles. Car was that deep maroon, chopped top, channeled, fenders raised, and was from Washington State.
The owner and his friend had just gotten it running again with a smallblock Chevy, and they had 'warming' issues...They stated it was an "Old Kustom", just restored.
    The year had to be...'93?
    Anybody shed some light here?

I liked it best when it was black in the late 50's. Gotta admit it looks better finished now than ever tho...

The one I recall was in a light shade of purple primer.
