Bonneville historians: results needed

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by **DONOTDELETE**, Mar 22, 2004.

  1. driver: Jack (sometimes John) Quinton
    club: whistlers
    car: 1932 Three window coupe.

I have information from the guy that helped write the article in the Rodder's Journal (lives right by me) about the Goleta Drags that the owner of my car helped form the drags and it was the fastest coupe there. He then ran my car at El Mirage and Bonneville for 10+ years.

My HopUp manual has my car running 147 mph in 1951 at Bonneville
I know it broke records in the 50's.....198mph with a blown Olds but when?

If anyone has any more info from old result pages or anything else, please let me know. I have many old pictures of it from 1947-1959 the later ones are with a blown Olds but no way of knowing from which years they came.

Barris also built him a custom 1941 coupe (pictured in Pat G's new custom book) and he pulled the 32 coupe to the lakes with it!

    thanks for any help.

Wow, you have some cool history already.
I hope you will find the rest you need.
What are your plans for the car? How are you going to buid it?

  3. I know what I know about the car because the original owner/builder is still alive but he is almost 90 years old and honestly, kind of an ***hole. Somewhere along the line he got burned and ****ed out of the car in the 60's and wont talk to me about it much.
I do sorta feel sorry for him but some of the other old timers around here say he sold the car fair and square and tried to get it back.... who knows? that was like 40 years ago!

Anyway, I am building it to look like it did at the Goleta drags in the late 40's. Chopped 4 inches with a 59AB. Before he slammed the door in my face, he did say he ran almost 200 mph in it in the late 50's.

Ron Main (President of the Sidewinders) is working on it's history and will make me new timing tags for all the years it ran.

Gooch - I'll check my old Hot Rod mags tomorrow and PM you if I find anything. You have any idea if it was ever featured, or just B'ville coverage?

  5. yes, there was a full feature on my coupe and the Barris coupe and Lee Hammuck (spelling) the guy that helped the Rodder's Journal has it. I am meeting with him again to copy all his pictures of my car this week.
Thank god for him because he is a founding father of our hobby and once was close friends with Jack Quinton. Funny, they all still live here in Santa Barbara but no one really likes Jack. He has pictures of Jack getting the 1941 Ford from Sam Barris himself.

I have E-mailed a copy of your first post to Glen Barrett with the SCTA, who knows a lot of LSR history. I will let you know if he can come up with something for you.

  7. So are you going to put a blown Olds back in it? Or maybe pick an era that is most do***ented. Wasn't the car dragraced too.

Bottom line is any car with any historical signifigents(sp) is gonna be very cool to own.

I love reading this type of stuff.

This weekend Dad gave me some more history of my car. How he worked 10 hour days for $1/hour bailing hay to buy the car for $175 from an appliance store owner in our town. The car came from Texas and was brought to Indiana by a guy in the Air Force. And how he paid $180 to have the whole car painted. I have a pic of it in '64 too.

Nice. Have you found out when the wierd chop happened?

  10. The rules changed and they chopped it and ran it last in 1962. it ran 198 in that year and broke the record by 17 mph. It was still a Quinton entry with Don Torgeson driving. The engine builder still works here in town and he has photos of it on his wall at work.

So if anyone has a 1962 results page, it would be under Don Torgeson in C coupe cl***.

  11. Did the car ever run at the drags in SanDieggo?
Under the SanDiego Timing ***ociation maybe?

Here's the cover, so you know what to look for at a glance. It looks like your car just missed being on the cover, with the lineup of cl*** C cars in the picture.

Today I heard back from Glen at the SCTA. He sent me message on to a man named Jack, who said this about it:

Tell the guy to call me. I'm sure we have all sorts of info on it. He could bring his pictures and probably put dates on them and copy Bonneville and lakes result sheets. I'm sure there is some Goleta Drags info in there also. Sounds like several hours or days of research or more, covering a 15-20 year span.

I thought that car was lost by John (jack) for some debt he owed? or some trade that involved a CRASHED car....

  26. guys, I am in total shock!
Rickyracer saw this at work and called me to tell me not to **** it up! He grew up hearing about this car but no one knew where it went. The one guy that knew where it was didnt dare tell anyone because he wanted to buy it..... ooops, that's when I found it and bought it on the spot.

I called him to get some of the history and he jokingly called me a son of a *****! He has wanted the car for 50 years.

RYAN, IS THIS WHAT YOU HAD IN MIND FOR THIS PLACE?

  27. This is the HAMB, This kicks ***.

    Give us more,

  28. Germ, I think only his Barris car went to shows. The coupe was a holy terror around here. On a trip back from L.A. the cops actually set up a road block to catch them. I guess they would drive down there in a full race Bonneville car and beat the **** out of cars on Sunset!

    thanks for any help.
Full HOT ROD MAG feature is way more than I expected.
