About an hour ago I replied to a thread that was asking about the Bop Top. I was wanting to know how they performed in the rain. I received an email notification with a response, but when I clicked on the link in the email to go to the thread it returned an error message. Now I can't even find the thread while scrolling down the main board. What gives?
I have had a Bop Top for a couple years now. I went for the curtains, too. The single seam across the middle of the top leaked during a very hard rain. I sealed it with a healthy dose of silicone between the seam and the bow, then sprayed the whole top with several applications of Scotch Guard after a good washing at the carwash. No more leaks, but I respray the outside after each rinse or wash. I employ curtains because of the extreme heat in South Texas. They work very good with the A/C; yes, A/C is a necessity where I live and drive. Used it all the way on our trip to Cal and back, about 4000 miles. No trouble, no leaks, but the curtains need to be "tweaked" to get a seal similar to a coupe. Similar I say because it will never be a coupe, BUT a coupe will never be a ragtop, hence the tradeoff. Sid Chavers designed the top to resemble a 3-window somewhat. It is by far the most popular and best looking ragtop to come down the pike.
Thanks for the reply. Better do a search of the forum...there are dozens of posts about Bop Tops. Gonna delete 'em all?
Well, the design itself IS traditional because rides from as far back as the '40's era look the same as Sid's tops. You are attempting to split hairs on this one, super moderator. If Brookville bodies are acceptable, Bop Tops should also be. The guy asked about Sid's tops because he wants to get an idea what people use. He is not familiar with the rigid rules set down by Ryan. Couldn't you have just warned him his first time "stepping over the line?" I bet he knows better now. Sheesh !
Your beef isn't with Cob, it's with me. I deleted it; the thread was 10 years old and was resurrected by a poster asking if anyone had one for sale. Editorial license - I deleted it.
Just wondering... was it the age or the inquiry that caused the delete light to come on? If age, why would that matter? LOTS of cool stuff, info, how-tos, and tons of history would be deleted if age was the factor. As for the inquiry, they are made here all the time for help, parts searches, links to suppliers, rod shops, off site wanted / for sale items, etc.. More to the point, how can custom rag tops not be traditional? Gary
Yeah, it was the appearance of it... Essentially, it looked like someone was trying to place a wanted ad on an old thread. I undeleted the thread and removed the offending post. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/bop-top-for-32.73769/
See explanation above. Want & for sale ads never belong on the main board - we delete them. We also delete things for editorial reasons which may or may not have to do with the content, age, and substance of the thread. Kind of a lot of hand-wringing for a thread nobody cared about for 10 years, ain't it guys?
Well I realize I'm flogging a dead horse here but: I responded to the thread because I'm building a roadster and I've been evaluating top options. Not having the skills or equiptment to scratch build a top I'm faced with having to buy one and I've been considring a Bop Top, which to my eye looks the most "traditional". In all the verbage about this top I've never seen an explanation of how well it actually does at performing it's real job...keeping water out. I saw the thread and thought that maybe I could solicit some real world, non-marketing influenced, opinions from folks who actually have a Bop Top. 'Was looking forward to what this might turn up. Imagine my surprise and dissappointment to see it was deleted. Didn't mean to start a hand-wringing festival. Thanks for the explanation Ryan and thanks, Gary, for your response. That's exactly the kind of feed back I was seeking.
No worries...honestly, I just saw the ad and a post or two responding to it - looked at the long period of time that had elapsed between said ad and original post and figured nobody would miss it; don't even recall seeing your question. My apologies.
Tom,I believe Henry Dana has one on his red roadster, shoot him a conversation.he can probably answer your questions and concerns. HRP
Please excuse me but wasn't the general discussion geared for post that are not totally 100% traditional? HRP
Not exactly, we focus on traditional hot rods and customs only. From time to time the staff may allow an interesting sidebar to slide, but for the most part we stick to our forum rules and guidelines pretty closely and communicate frequently if/when a gray area is encountered. The above thread was a gray area (for a couple reasons) and was ultimately given the go-ahead. As you know, the 'focused' sections are devoted exclusively to period correct hot rods and customs only, while the main board is reserved for discussion of hot rods and customs built in the traditional style (appoximating period correctness). In other words, the HAMB is not a catch-all old car forum or place for off-topic discussion. Our apologies if this ruffles feathers. Danny, I think you know that every one of the staff here works hard to make the HAMB a happy place...at the same time, we are human and subject to mistakes. Honestly, I sense some angst in your reply here and would welcome a private message to hear your concerns. Best to all, Gary
I can't imagine with 225k+ members you can even breathe without ruffling feathers. I don't always agree with some decisions (but never enough to post), but I do thank ALL the mods for doing such a bang up job.
Those words are appreciated more than you know. As I said in a Private Conversation a few moments ago, you guys are the heart & soul of the HAMB and your feedback is taken to heart. Hang with us...the best of the HAMB is yet to come!
I realize at times I can be somewhat of a antagonist and don't always agree with the moderators but what I do appreciate is their willingness to open the door for a conversation and explain why a specific action is taken. Thanks to Gary & Cob for your patience with me and what you do on a daily basis. HRP
Well, I just hope seadog attained SOME degree of cloture concerning how wet one gets in the rain with a BOP TOP. I also hope that seadog can attend the LSRU in April, because the man himself, Sid Chavers, will be there and answer any questions we may have about his tops. In fact, there will be numerous roadsters cruising in to enjoy the festivities, including several from the West Coast, most of which didn't start life in Detroit. Can't we all just get along ?
