I'm sure most everyone has one of these homemade tools laying around the shop but in the past I have always ripped of the emery cloth as it got worn, therefore making the OD of the sander gradually smaller than the hole. Last night I came to the realization that if I folded the emery cloth back under it self it would stay the same size. Maybe everyone already did this but I am pretty excited so I figured I would share the info.

The rod is just solid 3/8" rod with a slot cut in it on a band saw but I have used all thread and cut the slot with a die grinder before as well.

Insert emery cloth in the slot

Run the drill to wrap the emery cloth around the rod

Make it big enough to barely fit in the hole

Run the drill to sand the inside of the bore you are working on.
Find the worn out spot on the emery cloth and fold it under itself just past that point. Continue this process until the hole is cleaned out or you need a new piece of emery cloth.

You can also fold emery cloth in the middle insert 1/2 way and wrap the 2 tails in same direction.

I may be missing something here. I have used a wheel cylinder hone to do clean up up the bore so the kingpins on a 49 Ford would turn easier. Emery paper may cut better and be cheaper???

I have used this method to clean up the inside of all kinds of things, I think a hone would be best for a king pin bore but this works well on really rough stuff or when you need to remove material when the dimension isn't as critical as a kingpin would be.

What does the ****erfly method look like?
