I have a dinky 14 spline borg 5 speed. I am trying to link it up with my 348. Will the torque of this engine be too much for just putting around? I'm also having a little trouble figuring out which 11 in clutch I need... Piolot bearing... Throw out bearing? Do any 348/409 guys have any suggestions? I know the easiest solution would be to get a stronger trans but this one fits through the floor in my apache so well.

    Thanks Chandler

I ***ume your tanny is a T5 ? The only factory 11" clutch i know of is the 4.3 astro vans. I used all stock pilot bearing, throwout bearing ,and pressure plate for 72 chevy truck and then the astro disc.I have a 350 but i think it is the same for your 348 .Putting around will be Ok but i don't know if it will take much from a 348 and heavy truck to kill it.

14 spline 11" would be '85 Astro van.

You should be able to reuse all of your existing parts other than the clutch disc.

What did the T5 come out of? if it has the longer 7 1/8" input, then some modifications need to be done to the transmission, otherwise you would need a $150 spacer.
Mods would be to trim about 3/8" off the tip, cut about 1" off the bearing retainer, and run a 1/2" drill bit through the 4 mounting holes. Also, test fit the trans and disc without pressure plate and make sure the disc will disengage the flywheel. If not, you will need to either grind some off the backside of the disc hub, lengthen the splines on the input shaft with a dremel, or make an 1/8" spacer for between the trans and bellhousing.

I would look at a world cl*** Camero 5 speed with an S-10 tailshaft at the least. It will have the correct length input shaft and a larger 1 1/8 26 spline shaft. The 10.5 inch clutch should be enough to hold your motor for putting around?
