I have just aquired a Borg Warner R10E-1 tranny and am having trouble determining what it was originally installed in. Solenoid indicates Studebaker/Nash (4AR10B-62). My problem is actually with the bell housing. It will be going into a 52F1 and want to retain my current clutch setup. I believe I need the "hogs head" bell. Is there a chart showing the bolt patterns on the front of these trannys? Input shaft is also different from the other Ford stuff I have.

    Thanks,

    Gord

A little more info, Input shaft measures 6" from tranny face to the end. 1" -10 spline input shaft. Pilot shaft is .665", 4 bolt pattern, 5 1/4" across the two top bolts, 6 3/8" across the two bottom bolts and 7 1/4" from top to bottom on the right side facing the tranny. Flange that locates the tranny in the bell is 4.658" Diameter.

R10 does not bolt to clutch bell housing, but to 3-speed gear box end. B&W made R10's to different housings for different makes. For example in below; top one is for Studebaker, middle is Dodge (seen from below, drive shaft flange on left) and 3rd for Ford truck. As you see, the unit lenght is different for different makes even if the planetary unit is the same... Thus these are NOT interchangeable over makes.
An important issue is also the lenght of the reverse lock rod. (From 3-speed to the OD unit).

... one more, Mercury unit exploded view.
Here you see ONLY the B&W R10 OD unit, the Mercury 3-speed not illustrated.

Looks like '49-54 Ford to me. I think this transmission was replaced by the BW T-86 about 1955. Passenger car bellhsg from '49-53 Ford should allow it to bolt up to your flathead. Clutch and rear mount issues may have to be dealt with.

The black trans in your pics is a regular 1949-50 Ford passenger car overdrive transmission (non convertible). The 3 speed portion is the regular Ford 9 bolt side loader and the overdrive section is the Borg Warner R-10 overdrive unit. The BW section is pretty much designed for the specific vehicle chassis, even though a number of internal parts are common across all the R-10 overdrives.

Is there a bellhousing this will bolt to that lets me use the truck pedal and linkage or am I getting a car bell and switching to a slave?
