I posted this over on the main board, so I thought I would copy it over to our COE site. Over the winter period I did what I should have done on the rear end of my COE in the first place. Made proper fenders, and fit big fat wide wheels to make it look like business at the back. I used the single wheel option in the first place just to get it on the road, but loads of my friends and people said what I already knew !, it looked pinched in and narrow not right at all. Well I am very pleased with the result and I think it makes the truck beefy, and it's still the same width as before, with the front and rear fenders lining up. Now to start getting the use out of it. Including hub caps!!!
The handling is really good and the ride isn't to bad at all. Obviously a little light on the back but you get used to that don't you, particularly when braking hard. I have air shocks on the back also so I can adjust them to soften up. All in all I am pleased with the truck, I must say it's great to get out and about with it and I love driving it, also people's reactions are fantastic. Completely different response when I'm out with th truck and when I'm out in the Center Door. Guys have a look at this thread I put on if you have time http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...he-1974-st-paul-street-rod-nationals.1047555/
Looks fantastic.. They make add-on wide whites that you could use for the rear, right? I had a Willys FC-150 in the past. He was very stubby with the motor up front also. The factory put a huge chunk of steel between the rear frame rails to offset some of the upfront weight. The red along the fenders is a nice touch!
What's with those chrome pieces on the side gl***? Mine just had gl***. Or maybe more correctly, mine just had gl*** left.
They were the steel surround on the gl***, which I had chromed, I thought they were standard fitting.
My 42 has the side window steel wraps also . Probably because you would shut the doors so hard to et them to close after a few years of hard work on commercial trucks . LOL
Those are nice and I suspect serve an important purpose... My truck had Plexi gl*** on one side and nothing on the other... Any steel around the gl*** was long gone.
Skier , a lot of people have the gl*** cut to the Chanel's and are too big for the metal surrounds . As you can see the wraps have a lip around the outside the thickness of the gl*** . Notice the bottom holds the two sides togeather and is the lift . These are GM . I will not steal your tread Al , so if you need any info pm me . Al is this the same way of the Ford ?
Yes that's pretty much the same as the Ford, I thought I had taken a couple of pictures when I stripped the truck down but I can't find them.
My Autocar is built that way also, maybe something to do with gl*** strength back then, or trying to keep laminated gl*** from fogging along the exposed edge.
Ford went with the frame around the side windows in 47 , my 47 Ford C.O.E has them same as my 47 Mercury 1/2 ton. Don't know if they did it earlier.
