Bought a '34 Terraplane convertible

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by StillOutThere, Mar 9, 2010.

  1. I've known about this 1934 Terraplane convertible for about 25 years and it moved from one owner to another because it was used to pay a debt but it was never for sale until last week. So after keeping track of it all these years and asking about it and sometimes not (because I didn't have money available at times) it was finally for sale when I had some money.

These cars are on a 112" wheelbase. They have a 212" 6cyl flathead rated 80HP. It looks chopped but that was factory look for all the Hudson product convertibles from '32-47. Few left like this and I've been after it because it was never rusted or wrecked and is under 50K miles.

I get a set of velchrome argent painted 16" wire wheels and blackwall tires with the car and factory fender skirts and the red pinstriping is coming off pronto. Engine is freshly rebuilt so I'm going to drive it as an old cruiser with its oil filled original cork clutch and all. Unfortunately I won't get it home until after the Lonestar Roundup.

Be still, my Hudson heart!!! Welcome to the Wonderful World of Hudson ownership! Now, you'll need to join the Hudson Owner's Group here on the HAMB, plus the national H-E-T Club. Very nice and desirable car you scored on there, congrats!

Cool looking little Jet in the background, too!

For some reason, Robert Johnson's Terraplane Blues just popped into my head. :)

What a sweetheart of a car and nice to see a 'vert from the orphan makes. Well done and you must be stoked - living proof that karma exists, persistence pays off and that patience is a virtue!

Very nice. Great lines and flow. She's a keeper.

  23. Gee, what a whole lot of great responses from all y'all. THANKS!

Plans? Well, for now the purchase itself has drained the checkbook big time. The white top that is in those pics was peeled off with plans to replace it but no material was bought so I will be installing a black Stayfast top so the car will be black top over black paint with blackwall tires. They did buy new brown leather, enough to do the entire interior and rumble and door panels so that will get done too. With the rebuilt engine, clutch, trans all fresh in the car I'm going to drive it. The Railton Owner's Club (English cars of the '30s that used Hudson ch***is) have made up 3.5 :1 ring and pinions and I will replace the 4.11 :1 in the car now with that set. This car has the Baker Axle Flex that Hudson and Nash offered as no-cost option in the mid-30s so it has "semi-independent" beam axle (see attachment). Once the red pinstripe is off the car I'll get it re-striped in a cream along most of the long flowing body lines these cars are known for. I do plan a 12V conversion and new wiring harness also partly because it could stand new wires but mostly so I can see the road and be seen from behind.

Other attachments are the factory brochure cover and a factory photo showing a wowan next to a convertible with the top up and the fender skirts on a car with blackwalls back IN THE DAY.

The blown 392 Chrysler Hemi, etc. etc. is out of the question..... for now.

    Great score.
Those tires don't look right, though.
    Too short.

    Too cool...
Does it have the artillery wheels like the ones in the old photo? I'd like to see those up close.

  27. The 16" artillerys were on the car when the deal was made. They were the factory standard wheel. I was given the option of trading for a set of factory optional 16" wire wheels painted argent and I chose the wires.

I don't have a picture up close of the artillery wheel but they are also on that black and white photo of the lady with the cream colored car.

The wheels on these cars are a 4 bolt pattern, not a 5.

I have edited out a picture of the artillery wheel from another pic of my car. Hope this helps.

Nice car. I'd personally like to see it kept stock due to it's rarity but that's me. Thought you might enjoy these pictures of this modified one out of Illinois.

  29. Very likely my Terraplane will stay stock.

The blue '35 is a Hudson 8. W. Sagendorf is the owner. Quality car. That is a longer wheelbase than the Terraplane.

Nice nice car that should remain stock - I agree. Good luck with it.
