Bought a Burlington Flyer!! Turns out it’s actually a Fleetwing!

Discussion in 'The Antiquated' started by 57 Fargo, May 15, 2023.

  1. I’m looking at a small rv trailer from the 50’s, a Burlington Flyer built in Burlington Ontario Canada. So far I have had little luck finding much information. Anyone know anything about them?

I tried googling a few different things , nothing came up .
Burlington Ontario is just down the QEW from me nice city with a great waterfront scene lots of great bars and restaurants live band venues etc .

Anyways all I got , good luck in your search .

  3. I was told they were built there but it could be some other Burlington in the world as well.

  4. My wife and I made a 1400km round trip yesterday to Reddeer Alberta to pick up a vintage trailer. The motivation is our upcoming road trip to Kentucky this fall. IMG_4438.jpeg 70699445137__BB372542-B5EE-41C7-B3E5-3180B9D13F50.jpeg
It’ll get some paint to match the Fargo.

Wow! A canned HAMB camper! Outside looks really nice, hows the interior? Always found it interesting how space is utilized in these.

  6. I’ll get a few of the inside, overall it’s in pretty decent shape. Should be a fun side project to fit in between all my other side projects….

    Pretty darn clean!
    Roadworthy is not far away.

  9. be a pretty quick transformation I think

  10. Soo cool

I would do a two tone , what’s blue to match the colour of the Fargo and keep what’s white , well .. white .

could you do matching cragars ?

  11. If I come up with a cheap set of cragars! I’m not positive on the paint scheme yet but will be white with green to match the truck for sure.

  12. @VANDENPLAS, I do have a pair of old chrome reverse that would look good on it!

  13. Quick update, it’s not a Burlington flyer at all, that’s what the guy I bought it from was told, turns out it’s a Fleetwing, early ‘60’s as best I can tell in the little research I’ve done.

  17. That is the reason I got my wagon-well one of them. Look up Tin Can Tourist and subscribe to their magazine. They are a wealth of knowledge on trailers.

This is usually about the time when you realize that you should have just built your own from scratch.......

  21. That thought may have crossed my mind…

FWIW; When you finally get to sealing things up at the various outside joints, I *strongly* suggest you use the following: dicor 551LSW(non-sag, non-leveling) or 501LSW(self-leveling) lap sealant, This stuff flat out works. A few years ago I bought a FeatherLite enclosed trailer. After ~ 5yrs, one early spring day I discovered that the roof was leaking - in multiple spots, eventually traced to the original factory "sealed" roof seams. Nice... thanks for the "quality" work/materials guys - but at least it was expensive... Anyways, I ended up talking to a long-time motor-coach repair shop, & owner was quite familiar w/the problem, solution too. Which was the dicor brand sealants. I cleaned the old laps-joints up, laid down this stuff, & watched it flow a little to a really nice slightly wide bead. Still is working/sealing the roof-lap-joints yet, been ~ 10+ yrs. Sealant was not cheap, but it *is* actually worth every penny, especially since it's what should've been used in the 1st place. Now I know better, & any next trailer will get done as soon as it gets home.

  23. Yes! I have used Dicor on my big fifth wheel

  24. Progress…I think. IMG_5665.jpeg one back corner close to finished. I’m resisting the urge to overbuild this thing. It’s made it better than half a century at this point, so I’m just rebuilding what is there with a few modifications.

Actually most of it is decent.

  25. There might be a place for spray foam in this reconstruction, since you have gone this far.

  26. On stuff that isn’t for show, I use paintable rubberized undercoating which is somewhat reasonable and readily available. It is not a lifelong fix, but does seem to work.

57; did you glue in some thin tightly-fit styrofoam or other dense insulation in the "gaps"? Should help sound-proof(at least lessen it a tad or three), & maybe help keep it warmer inside when it's cold out, & cooler in when it's hot out. Or at least that's the theory/claim... :D . Guess that's what mini A/C units are for. :D . Makin' good progress.

  29. I will insulate the walls, the roof is just the plywood no framing up there.
