  1. Along with good looking welds the proper placement of the tack welds is nice to see.

merc pressure plate, Chevy 168 tooth flywheel.
was walking through my junk pile and spotted it.
    Pulled this from a 64 c10 with a 230
So get the pressure plate rebuilt, new flatty disc and throw out and I should be good. Ive got the 3 bolt starter and the adapter pilot bushing.
1319 (top) and a 988 borg and beck

I’ll drop both off and let the rebuilder decide.

  3. Other side. Slightly different, had to clear the fuel pump mount and the engine is offset to the passenger side about 1/2 an inch. Plus the drivers side needed exhaust clearance that this side doesn’t.
    IMG_1573.jpeg IMG_1572.jpeg
We’re gonna run an electric pump so no clearance needed for the mechanical one

  4. Anthony, offset motors is a common thing as I'm sure you know. You just want to make sure you keep the Crankshaft parallel to chassis centerline. Keep up the good work!

  7. Dropping the core support helped center the radiator and now have plenty of fan clearance. The fan was hitting it. Might have to notch the x-member a tad for a hose.
the inner fender bolts will be raised the same amount it was lowered. The latch doesn’t bolt to it

  9. Got the steering in and wanted to double check pan clearance. Thought we had an issue when the inner tie rods hit the pan. Forgot to set the toe. Made a big difference.

gold nut is temp. Bad castle nut.
got close to 3/8 pan clearance.

  10. Block and heads back. Just a simple clean and bore. New cam bearings.
    New guides, worked the valves.

he said he had a better set of PP heads and gave em to me and worked those. Same casting numbers.
Has a mild port polishing on em. Should be worth .03 hp

I’ve got the dampener that came with the top one.
Doesn’t mean it’s the correct one though.

yup with the long pump there is room between the pump and timing cover to shoot the timing light straight down. with the short pump, the back of the pump is right up against the timing cover

Pretty sure the one on top is 70’s or 80’s as well? I went through this a while back and think I remember two different TDC locations. I ended up with a mismatch between cover and balancer, but just used a bolt on marker and timing tape on the balancer to correct it. They all work interchangeably...sort of.

  16. I’ll epoxy engines as soon as I can from the machine shop.
A lot less clean up needed then. And the epoxy seals up the iron before ya get oil all over it during assembly. IMG_3529.jpeg
After assembly I’ll use wax and grease remover with a red scuff pad. Then paint.
Used a wire brush on a drill on the outside of the block. Hit a few rough edges with a grinder.
I’ll probably clean the block and let it air out tonight. It’s almost bed time.
I’ll clean up some tape edges and we’re good to go

  17. Been busy/slacking lately. Or spinning my wheels in other places.
About to assemble this thing. Got to figure out which pieces to clean up and use.
Script, Cal Custom or Edelbrock covers
Tri power or single. We ain’t worried which one makes more power.

the flatty in the merc was red.
Might go that color with this

Cal Custom and the 3x2, is my vote. You could run off the center carb only, if desired.

  22. Stupid sbc question of the day
O-rings with the cups over the springs
O-rings and umbrella seals no spring cups
Just umbrella seals if not using the spring cup
    The age old question.
    IMG_4108.jpeg IMG_4110.jpeg
    Or does it really matter.
Heads were originally o-rings with spring cups
My other set is no o-rings with umbrellas and no spring cups (single grove valves)

does it really matter as long as it’s got a seal that goes with or without the spring cup

I would say good question... I typically use umbrella seals although the ones for intake and exhaust have been different styles. I don’t think I have ever had the spring cups on anything other than stock stuff that I took apart. Curious what others do.

  24. Looked up the question
    Read a couple different opinions.
Same with you on the cups. They’ve only been on older stock engines.
My 462s don’t have em. They had umbrella or clamp on seals
Picking up new springs tomorrow and going to button these up.

the umbrella seals I have appear to be the same

  25. I have always used the o’rings only, but I don’t see why you couldn’t use the umbrella seals. It seems like they might do a better job? If my feeble brain remembers correctly, I don’t think I’ve seen a Chevy with umbrella seals. Wasn’t that a Ford thing?

  26. I guess.
I’m a Ford guy building chevys
My caddy came with em with the spring kit. The clamp on style caddy used wouldn’t clear the heavy duty springs

If the valve stems are groves for o rings then use them only. If no, then use the umbrella seals. I was a Buick heavy duty mechanic.

Many people make the mistake of putting the o rings on the valve and then installing the spring and retainer etc. most of the time the o ring gets cut when the spring gets pushed over it. first install the spring and retainer, compress until the o ring groove is visible, install the o ring and keepers and release the compressor....
