I haven't been on here for years, but I'm finally ready to jump in and be more active. I'm 72, and no longer able to do much work on my own cars. BUT, I recently bought the car of my dreams since I was 15 years old. 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe! In my mind, the most beautiful car Ford ever built. This one has a 1953 Mercury 255 flathead, and no rust or patch panels ever. I may make a couple of changes, like disc brakes and electronic ignition, but this one is about perfect. I wanted a 50s-60s hotrod, and this one checked all the boxes. The gl*** packs sound great, but I'm thinking maybe Turbos, since my wife and I have to shout at each other at 60 MPH. I got it from Spuds Garage in Temecula. It belonged to a long time rodder named Bob Kennedy, who is having some health problems and has decided to get rid of his collection. I built my first car, a 1951 Ford, in 1965, from a rust bucket 2 door sedan that I bought for $40 and spent 1.5 years building it. Glad to be back in the flathead scene. Now I at least have some money and can afford to get back into it.
You lucky devil. It's a great car and I'm glad for you. And, that bit about your wife and you having to shout at each other at 60 mph. I think that's great also. My wife shouts at me for coming in the house and we don't talk at all when we're in the car.
Congrats on the stellar Hotrod...I thought the 40 Hydraulics when all correctly adjusted perform very well...but if you must, save the old stuff including the ignition pieces for the resell which unquestionably will be appreciated. I hope that be a very long way away...Have Lots of fun with it...how could you not...
Great car & story - might be worth having someone put a top level sound deadening material through out interior and trunk - will help with cooling too
You know sometimes I think of anyone who has to work on these when that stuff's been applied in every nook and cranny aka patches for dings and such must be hell... I get that it really helps with noise and cooling and to boot this things mint but I always think of it everytime I see it...
Enjoy their years you have left and I wish you many more. I missed an opportunity to buy a 40 Ford coupe from a friend of my brother in 1961 wonder if I would have it today.
Beautiful '40! And if you leave in the morning, you can make it to Crane, Missouri by noon Saturday for the 2nd Midwest '40 Ford Gathering!
What a great car! You have spent your money very well! You now have a true kick *** rolling time machine!
I've shared quite a few rides here sold through Ole Spuds...some really cool period ones at that... I wouldn't be surprised to find out he's a Hamber...
Beautiful 40, sorry to hear of Bob's health problems. I haven't seen him for some time. Bob is the Kennedy Brothers (Bomb Factory) dad. Great guy. Mick
Really nice car. Spuds has the nicest. I too don’t build them any more. Two reasons; we bought a different house a couple of years ago and I gave up the shop I had with the previous one and I built one and learned it’s more economical to buy one done. Guess there might be another at 75 my building is behind me. There is always enough to do with those I buy to make them mine to keep me busy.
Beautiful ‘40! Temecula used to put on one hell of a Rod Run back in the 1980s! We’d always roll up from San Diego in our roadsters. Enjoy your Coupe, she’s a real Stunner!
I just spent the last two years building what will likely be my last ground up build. At 71 I'm done with projects this big, so if I do decide to get another it will be a project done, or far enough along I can tinker with changes, vs. building the whole car. So I sure understand the purchase of this fine old coupe, and making changes to personalize it for yourself.
I wouldn’t just be thinking about it I’d be cursing to guy who installed it and wanting to kick him in the junk!
