Watched the newest American Hotrod tonight, an hour I will never get back. All I can say is these guys are wankers, I dont know where to start, That Duane guy is a dork and has no people skills. I know they are playing up to the cameras. Belitteling interns, making big mistakes with raw materials.you see that scrap pile of Al rejects? Fags...........thats all I say.
Tman, I agree....just watched that episode, pathetic. Sure the swedish kid was new, and couldn't understand english, but these assholes make like he's supposed to know whats going on. They just threw him into the middle of this chassis build with Dicklips, the machinist. The foreman is a no talent ass clown, seems as if he's on a power trip around the shop. Then the "boxing match" between the two homos, what a crock. Funny how in every episode Boyd says " I thought I'd help relieve a little tension around the shop, yack, yack, yack" so he does a burnout in the pickup...wow. GAY Then he takes them out for go-karts, icecream, and a finger in the ass....what kind of carnival does this guy run? Sure the cars are nice...they spend alot of time on them, they have the best tool & equipment, as well as any part needed, with no budget in mind...any monkey can build a fancy car in that shop. My $.02
Tman- This post isn't necessarily to you, but in reference to all these lame ass threads that pop up after every tv program geared towards automotive enthusiasts airs. You see that big show, that big shop, that big pile of money for that car? Yeah. They are doin something right regardless if we are here to critique them. You build something better? You have a show? You don't make mistakes when building? Why do you watch it for an hour if you dont enjoy it? Why post about it on the internet? Why can't you people just be happy theres something on TV that gets you excited enough to tune in? Do you feel cheated? You could have done better? Everyone will watch next week, and we'll all see another post complaining while your project sits in your garage. Go get your project driving and show me your video. Thats quality entertainment. Yes, he's gay. And I know that without watching his show, which I don't. I can't stand to and don't watch any of these damn things, the hell of it all is that at work everyone knows me as "the car guy". So when one of these damn things is on the air I get people coming up the whole next day asking if I saw it, what do I think, do I think it could be done cheaper. I DON'T CARE!!! I want to see a show about a $100,000. car built for under five grand. I WILL watch that show. Where's the sport in building $100,000. cars for $150,000.? Go out and find me any moron that can't get a tv show worthy car built by pitching a shit load of cash at it. I can't remember the last time I was sitting in the garage wondering what to do about power steering and SoCal sent me a "FREEBIE". I don't consider that these guys have done anything "right" to get these shows, does that mean that the poor shmucks on "The Average Joe" have done something right, that they are rich, and are ladies men? I think, probably not. Sad truth is that everyone I know that can change their own oil can't stand these shows. However, I DO watch American Chopper. Why, you might ask? Well, there are two reasons. 1. I don't know a single thing about motorcycles. 2. I want to see Paul Senior get his ass kicked. And it's coming, oh boy is it gonna happen!!! AND... I'll be damned if I have to here about it from the shmucks at work! Oh yeah, I will have to grit my teeth through the Norm episode of MONSTER GARAGE, I'm trying to modify my TV to completely block out "JESSE JAMES" and his voice. BACK TO YOUR REGULARLY PROGRAM.
Uh, that's showbiz. I just wish I could con some schmuck into letting build (or her) that first 200,000 car. That would get me a little well equiped shop built. Then I could build one ride a year for some other schmuck. Teach a kid to do what I'm not going to be able to do forever. And live well. Probably would happen even if I had the chance, its just too hard for me to cheat people, even the dumb ones. BTW I don't waste my time with stuff. Don't like people with that type of attitude, and hype really turns me off.
Let's don't all assume that those big shops and big tools are even paid for. Debt makes the world go round.
I forgot to watch it...a Freudian Slip, perhaps!! (But I did catch the Indian Larry vs Billy Lane biker build-off again! ) Back to Boyd's show...I watched the first part of that 56 Chevy they did, and it kills me how rich assholes fuck shit up with no regard for what they're doing! They took a complete 56 Chevy two door out of a junkyard, then Boyd turned his goofballs loose on it...ripping the whole car apart like animals, only to declare that it was "too rusty to bother with", so they had the flatbed come back and haul the car back to the junkyard in a hundred pieces! What would have been an excellent starting point for any one of US (especially us Midwesterners!), was ripped apart and discarded by some rich fag who never actually gets HIS hands dirty doing a DAMN thing! (Fine to rip into an old car if you're gonna build it or something...but to just take a prime example of a buildable Chevy and tear it apart, only to discard it as so much trash deserves a size 11 (sorry, I ain't as big as Paul Sr!) staright in the ass!) Then...the junkyard brings Boyd ANOTHER 56 Chevy two door that he declares "fit to build"!! What's funny is that the second car looked about as "bad" as the first...then the jackass has his boys cut out the floor, trunk and firewall and replace 'em all ANYWAY!!! He coulda started with a total salt-eaten rot case for all the metal replacement he had them do! What a dip-shit! One episode of that crap was enough for me. I've come to enjoy Monster Garage and American Chopper, so I still watch those. Sure, they're corny, but it's fun to watch...and it sure beats anything ELSE on the "idiot box" (as my Grandma used to call it!)!!! Boyd's show misses the mark...it's NOT entertaining, it's not fun to watch...it just BLOWS! That rich old bastard would have a cow if he saw the cars that REAL get-their-hands-dirty hot rodders worked with!!!
American Chopper Assembly.....all I have seen them do is...A. modify a rear fender....B. modify a gas tank....C. send every other part out to be built or painted....great work if ya can get it!!!!!
Dumb question, but why couldn't they grind out the crack and weld it? Seems like 15 minutes work, and they welded on the inside plate, so I don't see how it could've weakened it.
[ QUOTE ] See jimmy whites hemi powered coupe or evilford's coupe -Dane [/ QUOTE ] Ironically, Jimmy cut his teeth at Boyd's before he started his own shop... In fact, Jimmy built most of the Boydster chassis. It's tv. Personally, I don't like the American Hot Rod, but I love American Chopper - I just think it's funny. Man... those are some ugly bikes.
I liked the shit out of it. I don't pay any attention to the TV hype. That's there for the people who don't know a frame rail from a quick change. Where else can you see a frame being built on TV? Even if you don't agree with his methods or execution, you have to pick up something good or bad. I like the fact that they show their mistakes instead of editing them out. You have to admit he keeps up the quality controll. I'd like to see more of the frame design process for the crossmembers and bracketry. There has to be a set of plans somewhere to work from. I'd love to learn more about the process from the computer design to the computerized milling machine. It's like looking at an old hot rod with purple shag carpeting and a brushed pink paint job. I don't like it but I look right past it to whats inside that I can use. If I have to put up with the drama crap to get to the interesting part...so be it. I did find the building part interesting, but I'm still learning. I don't know it all yet.
I watch anything car related! Speed has some new shows that are questionable at best, (cut chop rebuild) and another I can't remember. Boyd needs to fire a couple of guys for sure. Some how they still get them done. Luckily they have that balb guy and the painter whos dad died making sure the cars are done right. I know we have many guys that are better on here but atleast its hot rod related and not some "tuner" show. I watch them all! j
I do like the chopper build off series, seem to focus more on the building and less on the drama, those are pretty good shows. Seems like the producers were trying to create some drama though in the Billy Lane / Dave Perowitz episode. Maybe we need to somehow let the producers know that the chopper builder series is more like what we want to see (they dont seem to be as popular as the other shows??) While I am talking about Dave Perowitz, the motorcycle museum in Sturgis has a huge display of Hamster bikes and colors, wonder if they would be willing to display another clubs stuff so readily???
boyds gay. does he still wear the same shirts? i know not of these television shows you speak. the "cable bill" this month bought me a couple of old mag wheels, some bullet lug nuts, and some bullet centers fot the wheels. my "new car payment" bought a lot of cool shit! on the scrap thing, kinda funny, i talked to a guy the otherday who worked for Colorado Custom wheels. amazing how little regard they give to fucking up a wheel! oh well, thats life, slap another in the machine! he was trying to tell me about some boyd coddingham project or something, wasn't a car guy, just a programmer.
Jesse James worked for Boyd, he's gay too............ I want to know what the heck happened to Southern Chopper? I liked it more than any one I've seen yet!
Funny how these magazine types are quick to defend their cronies.........[read that advertisers]-Im sure Boyd Coddington and a lot of other people are real talented....but the show comes off in such a way as to present a load of hype that is in a way akin to WWF spectaculars. I personally thought out of all the automotive/bike show offerings as of late,That "Rides"-proved to be the standout. It was more like a documentary of the circumstances and personalities[and their talents] involved, rather than a LAME attemt to appeal to MASSES[the non "car type" viewers].
All I have to say is that they should change the title to "High School Hot Rod". How old are those kids? The two that duked it out looked like they shoulda been in class instead. But then again, maybe I'm just getting old in my 26 years.
[ QUOTE ] See jimmy whites hemi powered coupe or evilford's coupe for more info. [/ QUOTE ] daign, i love you... in a manly, hetero sort of way, (or is it homo??).... regardless, thats why i dont own CABLE... waste of time and money.
"Rides" seems to be about the only good one... I really can't the focus on drama that the other shows have. I really think "Monster Garage" could be a better show if they focused on the build and quit making a big deal about ego-maniacs. "Junkyard wars" always seems interesting, because they focus more on the building than other "car shows". That one about the 56 chevy... I only saw a half hour of it... Man, I would not want to work at that shop. The foreman is a no-talent asshole, and it seems like there's only 2 or 3 guys who actually know what they're doing. Coddington... man, i've had bosses like that. Passive-agressive as hell, but tries to act like the "nice guy" when other people are looking. I really liked that one part where he said "Who here was planning on going home early? Huh? Anyone here?" Like he was waiting for someone to say something so he could hand them their ass. What the fuck ever...
The thing about American Chopper is I am sure they ham it up a bit for the camera but alot of it I think is just the way they are...my old man is just like the Dad when he deals with me on stuff...and they are family, so it seems to ring sorta true and I kinda like watching it. (It beats fucking Friends and shit like that) Rides rules, best car show bar none. Monster Garage does not bother me too much, I watch it...but it kinda has run its course I think. America Rodder...I admit it, I watch it (but everyone knows I am gay anyhow)...they play it way to much for the camera and none of it rings true to me. I wish they would have picked someone that was a little more in tune with the real hot rod world or had gone with someone that was more personable and interesting. Troy, Roy, or someone of that caliber would have been more interesting and I do not think they would have gone into "star" mode like Boyd, who has always been that way even before the show. When Cadzilla came out I saw it and bought the little Boyd Hot Wheels set and asked if he would put his sig on it and he wanted to charge me some crazy fee for it even though I bought the set for too much from him...ah well. I still think the rides with Roy and the 32 (I liked it better without flames myself) and the one with Troy (and Chicayne, I LOVE THAT CAR) were good shows. Just my worthless .02
That's funny choprods, I am a magazine-type and I have never seen the show (and yes, Boyd is one of the advertisers you'll find in our mag). I guess that I have a hard time justifying spending an hour looking at the brain box when I have a garage full of projects that need attention... I guess the answer to the whole last night's American Chopper/ American Hot Rod/ Monster Garage/ Biker Build-Off/ Motorcycle Mania episode sucked post that waste Ryan's bandwidth (just like this reply is doing) is to actually spend those collective hours getting your hands dirty in the garage. Time is precious, spend it doing something constructive.
My boss here in Vegas has had a couple of cars done by Boyd (and every set of wheels on all his cars) and he's even done with him. When he pulled his 36 Ford out of his shop my boss told me he was getting tired of Boyd not working on his cars because he's out being a star. So maybe when more of his customers get tired of the rock star thing and leave, he will come back down to earth.
sad part is,EVERYONE here would JUMP at a chance to build something of there's on tv and get paid for it,and if anyone says noway, there full of shit.let's face it,we all know it's staged on coddingtons show, but thats generally what people tune in to see...controversy.in reality, there's probably only a handfull of us who actually want to see the real end result, something cool being made from nothing.besides that, gay or not, weather it be jessse, boyd,or the teutels, there ALL gay right to the bank....
I am on my lunch break, at work, on Saturday, so I am "justified" in my spending valuable working-on-my-ride time on this thread A few things occur to me: Regardless of what genre of car building you are in, it's always gonna be a clique (to an extent) and that clique is always gonna want to have drama with another genre....its human nature, and it never fails. We don't advance our philosophy, nor do we further populate the world with our "type" of car when we participate in fostering drama, but by god, we do love it! Secondly, television is a revenue-based medium. TV programmers make money when companies purchase ads, and those companies that advertise make money when people watch the shows, and people watch the shows when they have a personal "buy in"...people are motivated to watch shows because of the visceral reaction they have. Ergo, it is incumbent upon the programmers to foster drama and anticipation so that people will watch... Ka-ching. Drama and controversy make for good (read "revenue-generating") TV. The Boyd show, which I've never seen, because I dont have cable, seems to be a perfect example. Finally, whether or not you like Boyd or Jesse James, et al, or not, the truth of the matter is that these people came up the hard way....they earned their notoriety. They are also the beneficiaries of marketing genuises, and therefore famous, and therefore fodder for criticism. Frankly, my guess is that they could care less. They worked for what they have accomplished....like it or not, they experienced the same travails that everyone else in this sport has experienced....they just decided to make a living at it. My guess is that they are enjoying the fruits of their efforts, and they understand that haters=revenue. Hell, you can purchase WCC crap at Target, these days. Ya follow?
