when I built my first car in the 80's I thought Boyd was like "magic'. lately I have seen sorta ugly remarks about his method of building etc...this may be a little lesson to us...if you can't say anything nice about someone, don't say it. very hard to do but it works. may God have mercy on him.

  4. I hope he is fine.
The sites are kind of misleading.
Can anyone explain why the PR-USA site has tomorrows date up?
    Yup, February 27, 2008.

Well said. Boyd and "Lil John" are two of my all time favorite builder/fabricators. God Bless both of them and their families...Mike

    Prayers sent for both men.

Altho not a fan of the whole billet thang, I will say that seeing Boyd's Che-zoom in the pages Street Machine (UK) magazine back in the day pushed me over the edge of this slippery slope I've been on since.

It's never good to see a prominent one of our own in this condition. Get well, Boyd.

I assume that crook in Oz means sick. If so yes, Lil' John has been ill for quite some time. If you search the forum you can find several threads that discuss his condition.

This is certainly sad. We met Boyd and Jo at Louisville, and they were both very nice to us.

We will keep them, as well as Lil John, in our prayers. May God show His mercy, and grant them strength through this difficult time.

i met Boyd before, and to be honest-- i thought he was a jerk. sometimes ego does things badly to people.

i've seen work that he's done that i like and a lot that i dont.

That said, ive got no reason to wish him ill will. Get well soon, and prayers sent.

Same thing here. While I never met me him he certainly came off as a jerk on his show. As a person who has never been a fan (and probably never will) of his that apparent attitude didn't improve the way that I viewed him. Not that he cared. Who am I? I'm reminded of my how my GrandDad has alway said that everyman who has died was a great person. Not saying that Boyd isn't. Like I said, I've never met him. It does suck that people have to suffer and I do feel badly for him and his family. But whether he recovers or not that is life. Nobody lives forever and we all go somehow. I'm sure there are several other cliches that I forgot. At least Boyd has created quite a legacy that his family can be proud of for generations to come. A man can't ask for much more than that out of a single lifetime.

  16. Never meet the guy and never want to but like others have said no one deserves to go like that for building ugly cars. Hope he does get better, he has to go out and fix the hole in the salt he left!

Jim - Not to bash on your post or anything and I do respect your wishes for someone's health, because we can all value health.

But when you say "he made his mark" I can't seem to get past the ethics he used to make that mark. The countless people and companies that never got paid for making products for him. He hurt a lot of people finanicially, he even hired people and never paid them for their work or talent, what they were worth. And lets not forget all the illegal car registrations and phony titles cases that were uncovered so he could make more money. If anything, this only hurt the Hot Rod world and caused many DMV's to look closer at vintage car registrations.

I have always seen him more as a Street Rodder than a Hot Rodder.

Yes, he made his mark, but how he will be remembered, will be dependent upon how well you knew his true character.

Maybe that legacy is more shakey than I thought. I knew he bankrupted, but none of the other stuff.

We have all done some shady stuff. Some more than others. That is no reason to wish anybody ill. I hope Boyd and L'il John both make a speedy recovery and live long healthy lives.

  23. Yup, kharma. Bet a bunch of investors from the 90s are not so sentimental.

Meanwhile, a coworkers 17 year old daughter died in her sleep the other night. They were trying to diagnose a siezure issue. My prayers are going towards her family.

I only saw him in the early days. He'd be in a chaise lounge with a classy drink in his hand, and a wet towel on his forehead, while some grease-ball was working on building or fixing a car for him.

Still, he probably had a great life, so who are we to judge? Anyone who didn't get treated right, probably shouldn't have been in the business anyway. Car people are like Carnival people--they all suck (you and me too). All you had to do was call a few people and they would lean on him, and he'd pay up fast.

He probably had more fires and equipment ruined then anyone else in the business, so he didn't get away with anything, as some people think. Everyone knew his address, and fire always cancels a payment due.

  26. WTF? Did you even read the thread,he's very sick. This has nothing to do with payments due or setting his place on fire.If you can't wish a guy well when he's ill, maybe you shouldn't say anything at all. Boyd is still a car guy,as are we all.

  27. Chezoom and Cadzilla.....and I have to admit the Aluma Tub and Whathehey are fantastic cars.......he has a vison most of us can't understand and some of his stuff is just not nice but you can't knock the guy for waht he has acheived

  28. Most cirrhosis is NOT alcohol related. The majority of cirrhosis is of undetermined cause - perhaps genetic or maybe work related (I hear that he did a lot of spray painting himself at one stage).

I hate to hear that about Boyd and Lil John. Both have been instrumental in helping many of us decide that we need to pay a bit more attention to details and do things just a bit better than we might could have gotten away with otherwise. Over the years I have learned a lot by following both of them.

I have to agree with Blackjack. Working around paint, chemicals and welding for years can be pretty rough on a guys system.

I remember that layout of Cadzilla in Hotrod magazine like it was yesterday. I thought he was the greatest car builder of all times.

I'lll keep him and his family in my prayers.
