    Good morning,

I have a superbelle 4” drop, 47” kingpin to kingpin that I bought as part of a package. I’m not exactly sure what everything is from so I’ve been researching and piecing together the puzzle. I need to replace the brakes and am trying to figure out what it is before taking my best guess and having to send parts back if they don’t fit. I’m guessing it’s a 37-48 ford set up, but it seems there may be some differences between some of that stuff. If anyone can recognize it and let me know I’d sure appreciate it. Thanks!

  2. Looks f1 or f100 brakes. Those are way better than the original Lockheed type brakes used from 39 to 48 as they are self energizing (Bendix type) and the Lockheed are not. If your drums are good even better, have them turned and run it.

I would recommend buying all the wheel cylinders, shoes and hardware, and self adjusters for a 65 66 f100. They will all bolt right on and fit as original, but are self adjusting and once set up are was less maintenance intensive as the early non self adjusting and way way less than the early Lockheed type brakes.

my build thread for my 39 has some info on using the later shoes and hardware on the f1 f100 brakes. Link is below

  3. Ask the pic with you measuring the bolt pattern, that is not how you measure it. Measure from one wheel stud skipping one to the next stud. That will be 5.5 inches on those.

  4. Just to make it easier here is a reply I did on this issue a while ago on a different thread and a link to the thread. It lists all the parts and numbers needed for everything to make these self adjusting.

  5. If the center hole in the drum is over 3" you have F-100 hubs and drums; if the hole is less than 3" you have F-1 hubs and drums.

If you do need drums '53-'62 F-100 drums are readily available and while F-1 drums are obsolete, Bronco rear drums fit.

This is one of the 52 F-1 Backing plates I have that I harvested off a 52 chassis.

If I can wack my way though the weeds I'll see if I can get some decent photos. I think Rich mentioned one of the big differences though.

Rock Auto says both 52 F-1 and 53 F100 take 228 shoes. =11x2 Front wheel cylinders show The same part number in some lines.
