I'm building a '50 fleetline and don't know if I want to go with manual or power brakes. It has disc in front and drum in back......any advice/opinion would be great
I've been wrestling with the same decision on a 46 Ford I am going to build for my daily driver. It will have MMII front end with discs and drums on the back. I am pretty sure at this point I will use the power brake booster setup I have as it will simply give a little better braking and less pedal pressure. Normally, I use non power boosted brakes but the 46 will be heavier than the usual roadsters I do, and I do want to drive it every day in traffic. Don
I've got disc drum combination on my 50 Ford. Car weigh's in the 3000 pound area and I see no need for power assist. This combo stops faster than most any newer car I have driven. I'm also using the original master cylinder. Yeah, someone will say I should have a dual chamber cylinder for safety reasons but I don't see any need for it if your braking system is all new and maintained properly. I also use DOT-5 brake fluid. No leaks. JMO.
Same results as flathead4d. '55 Chevy Del Rey 10.5 disc rotors in front and stock rear drums. Using the stock '55 master cylinder, single chamber, all new parts. Stops very well and without any of the typical proportioning valves, ect, works as designed.
Just be sure your pedal ratio is correct for whichever you choose. Stock pedals would have been set for a manual setup.
That is some good info and I think I'm going to run manual with dual m/c. If I want to change to power I can always do that later........
