Atthe Hot Rod reunion in Bakersfiled, I found that Hurst Cheater slicks are back in production. A guy named Cody Adams and his dad bought the Hurst Name and all the old molds and machinery and is now re-popping the tires. They don't have a website yet, they just started up. But here is his contact info: Adams Hot Rod rubber Po Box 2818 Oregon City, Or 97045 503-656-1544 Fax 503-656-1544 Thought maybe some of you guys might like to know this. If anyone interested, I'll try and post the hand out's he gave me later. He has all the tires listed on the hand outs etc.
if i mnot mistaken, guy on here used to own that stuff, but didnt make enough money for it to be worth his time... he ran gopod deals for the hambers... will these guys step up??
Cody came by my place after the Alington Drag Strip reunion and dropped me off a pair to try out. He wants to know how well these things are performing and such so he can offer the best product he can. I guess it's like R&D. I will try these slicks out on a few cars (Hopefully FedSleds Merc too)and report back to him. The down side is that the rainy season is comming up fast, and slicks and rain are not the best of freinds. He would also like to hear any feed back from others who have tried these tires. I would imadgine one could contact him with the info that Buick 59 posted above. I wish Cody and his Pops the best of luck and if I am lucky I will see how they run down the freeway this weekend on the way to the Monroe swap meet weather permiting.
So are these full on "old school" bias ply Hurst cheaters, or are these the radial recaps that Suedesled here on the HAMB was making?
If they are bias plies, the Beater might need a set! That's all that banjo rearend needs is some hookin' action!
If they started making piecrusts that were decently priced and actually hooked up they would rule the world.
Hot Rod- I wasn't aware that the Hurst tires had been out of production, but I did check out the display at the CHRR. Everything I saw there was recapped on radial casings.
I have had them on my 55 since feb as a street tire they even are good in the rain and a real good looking pie crust , they have 8.20 15's and mine or 10.00 15's they will not hook at all on my car , are super heavy and ride great. and they are goodyear wrangler lt radial recaps in the 10.00 15s go to speedway and look at the new not caps piecrusts even in whitewall killer........
Bob, it has nothing to do with drag racing... see the ribs on the edge of the tire, like a Firestone? Looks like a pie crust doesn't it? It's that simple.
Yeah. I used to own it but it was too much of a liability. It wasn't a viable company and this summer I started getting tires back with the caps coming off so I walked away from it.
I have had the same set on my 54 and now my touring. No, they dont hook on the strip, but like dragrcr said, they work great on the street and look good. My cores are Goodyear Eagles.
Any chance we can get this guy on the HAMB? I have lots of questions I'd like to ask... Unfortunately, it looks like the caps are coming off my brand new hursts...
He is already here HOTRODRUBBER. Don't have time to post as traveling from show to show. Have rebuilt all the machinery and relocated in a big new shop. If I'm not mistaken they have 50 plus molds for tires. A small family operation, and making every effort to make a good tire. I'm sure we will hear from them when things slow down. I've know them for quite some time, long before the HURST deal. Cody and Steve are long time racers and rodders, big MOPAR fans. .................OLDBEET
Here is a little info on radial casing life... My brother is in the commercial tire business, they do alot of caps for trucks. They have implemented an age limit on radial casings, 5 years for over the highway, 7 years for local trucks. The age limit is based on failure history. A radial tire has carbon steel wires in it. Any small crack or puncture in the casing can let water in. If water gets to the wire, it rusts. Rusted wires break. Broken wires cause seperations. Seperations cause blowouts. Some of the casings we saw at the CHRR were 1987's...18 years old. Bias casings on the other hand have string in them. String doesn't rust. Bias casing will last alot longer than a radial. It is just too bad there isn't a good supply of bias casings. It might be worth while to buy new Coker Bias Plys and have them capped. Neal
I just got back from about a 40 mile drive in the 63 Fairlane that I just put a set of Cody's (HURST brand) on. The Fairlane ain't much on power but with the slicks on, it does drive very nice and it was raining to beat hell about half the trip. Mounted them on stock 6" Ford wheels and they balanced out real good as well. The Fairlane has the stock 260/2 spd trans so I don't think I will be spinning alot of rubber except in the rain, but it sure does drive and look good with the polished slots up front and slicks on a black wheel out back. The slicks I have are on a "Wrangler" case. I like them so far. Now if I can get FedSled to mount them on his 427 powered chopped Merc, we can test the traction and durability.
that makes a lot of sense... my old hurts were made from brand new coker tires I bought and sent Ron...
Also,,, Truck tires have a recap limit regardless of age... once the caseing has been capped three times, the case gets tossed out. thats the law IIRC i do agree that buying a new coker tire and having it capped is a good idea, but damn if it aint a pricey route.
I can ***ure you of this, they don't make noise, but holy hell do they put out some smoke!! Errrr, I mean that's what I heard, yeah that's it
look at speedways slicks , we bought a pair for another 55 g***er we are building and they are 10.15's whiteway piecrusts and not recaps but new tires , very nice indeed havent driven yet but fit and finish is excellent and about 220 each , again new not recaps.............and not radials
