I just mounted and balanced my 904 Hurst slicks. It took like 12 oz of weight and switching the NEW rims around to balance out. My trustworthy tire guy said they were a ****TY recap. I called where I bought them and they said Hurst went out of business.

Not to stir the pot on the above "Caps", but if I find a set of tires at a swapmeet for $50 for a set of four stored inside. They are a great deal and will be driven everywhere, but you get a set of tires that need a hand-full of weights and the "tire guy" claims they are junk.

Well, drive to the Bonneville Salt Flats on swapmeet tires going down the interstate @ 70mph+ and it just makes me shake my head that guys ***** and moan about new tires. It is a risk that we take. It ****s that some are not up to par, but there is a learning process involved in everything. Heck, I learned something about the steel/string tires.

I think that there is a post a while back about "Bob Bleed" driving home on a thrown cap. It was a great post.

do you think three quarters of a pound is acceptable?

I do believe the new owners have the best intentions, and they seem to be trying to work with their customers to get a tire they can be happy with.

there is diffinately a market for a good looking, well made old style cheater slick, new or recap

but the Hurst label did not come without it's recent history of problems,

Cody and his family will have to make some significant improvements in their product to bring the Hurst name back around.

at the very least they need to do some serious quality control, maybe even mount and spin ever tire before it goes to the public.
until they develope a consistanty improved product

    I wish them luck.

My new Hurst tires took wayyy too much weight. Course, mine were given to me by you guys so I'm not nearly as upset as I would be if I paid for them.

I do think the new HURST guys need to get on this thread asap.

P.S. lets not start slinging **** on this thread please. If you got beef with suede, pm him... I would like to use this thread just to get to the bottom of these new tires and find out about quality and plans. Hurst could very well be our ONLY source for appropriately sized cheater slicks at this point.

  5. BTTT,I had my Hursts weathercheck a bit a few months after I mounted them. Ron was willing to take the tires back for inspection/replacement. That was a pretty generous offer.

Someone who knows the new owners let them know we are interested in their product and improvements that could be done. I hope they get it all up to speed, I will need some new ones next year!

Let me make it perfectly clear that I have nothing to do with these tires. NW Speed has no connection with Hurst tires in any way.

Personally when I got my Hurst tires from Ron the first set could not be balanced. The second set took 8 oz. of weight. They have run about 6,000 miles at highway speeds (sometimes in excess, oh well) hours at a time and have held up fine. Actually show very little wear, and they were on radial casings. I only point this out to encourge the new owners to duplicate Ron's success, the tires sure look great and I wish them well but quality problems with tire can not be tolerated and will put them under quickly.

  8. Mine would have taken a lot of weight to balance as well. I didnt even bother, just ran them. Never had an issue.

I have not had the chance to try them, I have looked at them many times and can't wait to try them. I don't know how many of you have tried to drive a set of real slicks on the street but I have. and If you don't do a huge smokey burn out every morning before you leave for work(real popular with the neghbors at 5am) they bounce up and down the street until they get warmed up. and if you want to make them drive decent you got to jack the air pressure way and then they don't work worth a ****. the new street slick radials work well but still are designed for the drag strip cause they don't hook on the street either, they are made for the street legal tire cl***es and work well on the strip. My point being, your not gunna get a tire that looks period correct and drives around well at 10psi. I think these tires are perfect for what they are designed for, looks and function. You run street tire pressure so they got to wear evenely and be safe on the highway. I don't think any tires that are 10 inches wide on a big horsepower car on the city streets are gunna hook. I have also used re-caps on many of my cars and still will if the price is right, cause I like doing big long smokin burnouts and I damn sure aint buyin new tires every time.

  10. What I would like to see is production of those very cool Hurst forged aluminum 5 spoke wheels.

Any chance of that ever happening?

I really hope the new owners get it working out and come out with a narrow 15" (7 or 7.25 wide) with a wide white wall. I need a set for my Sedan (since it is fendered I do not want it sticking out to far (a little is just right).

  12. Different Hurst I believe, correct me if I am wrong.

Fedsled is right, thats why I am storing my Touring at my folks house. I do my morning burnout in THEIR neighborhood!:D

RON Hurst (not to be confused with GEORGE Hurst of shifter fame) was capping p***enger and truck tires in the 60's. Cheater slicks and dirt track tires were a growing protion of the business. I'm currently running a set of Ron's dirt track tires on my banger powered Zipper lakester. These are 16" Firestone Wilderness radials with tubes on NOS '35 wires. Almost too much traction!..... Ron moved the operation from San Diego County to Idaho some years back......Lee Thompson, also of San Diego, capped Goodyear Blue Streak look alikes for the SCCA and slalom crowd in SoCal in the '60's.

I don't want to be a pest, but since I'm from Sweden and don't speak english very fluent, I'd appreciate if someone could post any info about these tires. Someone must have checked them out.

    Thanks, Magnus
