My uncle restored one for my cousin and I when we were kids. It was a riot, scared the hell out of me!
Hello, I wish fellow HAMB member @Dean Lowe could come back on and tell us about his racing days. No, not in his fabulous RPU, but before, when he was the So Cal Champion in the Quarter Midget Class racing. Our dad was talking to his friend in Los Angeles about his son racing quarter midgets. His older son was too tall to fit in the midgets. But, his youngest son could easily fit into a custom Kurtis Kraft black midget race car. He wanted to know if we were interested in participating in the quarter midget classes. But, alas, we were also too big to fit in the quarter midgets safely. We knew the feeling of going fast in our homemade low slung go kart, using our mom’s lawnmower engine. But, these quarter midgets were the real thing. And, they were twice as fast as our lawnmower go kart… yikes… Our friend’s son’s battles with Dean Lowe were famous and we saw several races with those two going neck and neck on the race track. By the time my brother and I went to watch him race, we were too large to fit into the quarter midgets. But, the moment was not lost on both of us. It was pure competition among little kids and the girls were also involved in the racing, too. Jnaki It was one of those things that had we been introduced earlier and our dad was “gung ho” about his two sons racing on the quarter midget tracks, that would have been another story. But, the stories should come from our HAMB champion, @Dean Lowe
When I was a kid in the 50's & early 60's our neighbor had 3 of those carts and used to set up a track at the local shopping center on Sundays, (no Sunday shopping back then). If I was lucky I got to drive them on the weekdays when he would do his maintenance on them. Great fun and good memories.
