I once hauled a 33 Ford from North Illinois to Florida on an open trailer in Mid December. This was stalled project that at best was a Mocked up Roller in partial primer. No glass, no hood, completely open to the elements. This was a good car that I would have done enclosed trailer, but really didn’t have much of a choice at the time.

Constant Snow, ice, rain all the way back. When I got back, I just hosed the entire car down and washed off as much road film and debris as possible.

What are you going to do? Had I waited for better weather or circumstances, I would have lost the car.

  7. I was kind of going to mention that. ^^^^^ I think that cars are made to be driven. Granted I have never owned a show car so I could be wrong. o_O:rolleyes::D

CCC >>>So did you get it or not ?>>
MT >>>It is a quality driver.>>> it is the most I have ever paid for a old car and I don't want it ruined.>>>

Tony prolly can't answer yet. Cuz he's still in shock by how much he paid. His next challenge will probably be trying to overcome fears of driving it instead of trailering it on public roads.8^)

I guess were good enough to ask the question for but not good enough to share the ride.

I know this one is done, but just to throw this out there one more time for posterity. Read up on the difference in salt (Sodium Chloride) and Magnesium and Calcium Chloride. Road salt is itself nasty stuff but is easier to wash off. Mag and Calcium Chloride is evil stuff for metals and wicks past supposedly waterproof connectors and eats copper wires. The spray gets in tiny crevices and is very difficult to get washed out because it is formulated to stick. It's a real problem for over-the-road trucks. Hard to say exactly when it started heavy use for snow and ice control but somewhere around the mid '90s to '00s depending on the area. It is preferred over salt because it does not require dump trucks, easier storage, easier application.... It is mixed with water and sprayed out of a plastic tank. So traditional vehicles never had this to deal with. And 20-30 years ago it wasn't really a thing yet. All I am saying is that this may be apples and oranges for comparison of what people used to do and how roads were maintained in Winter.

Sorry about the wait, I saw some of the notifications but didn't have time to reply. I ended up waiting a few days where it was dry and he trailered it down to me free, saved me a 5 hour trip. I then washed the hell out of it. I was/am nervous about keeping it nice. I tried buying a 49 on December 20th and when I got there the under side was rotten so I didn't buy it. I'm glad I didn't. I liked the custom touches the other one had but this one is way nicer. It has a couple rust bubbles in spots but should be a easy fix. For this summer I'm just going to drive the hell out of it.

Cool! Congratulations, and thanks for this update. Now do as I say and not as I do: Try not to be nervous about keeping it nice. You'll have a lot more fun. :D

Beautiful! And great of the seller to deliver it to you. With a car like this, there's lots you could do, but it doesn't really need anything.

Nice Merc! Glad to see the 4 dr models being bought and driven. 50 years ago my now ex brother in law drove from Madras Oregon to Nampa Idaho to buy a really nice '51 Merc 4dr, all stock. Price was $1000. I lived in Caldwell ID at the time. He turned it down because the guy wouldn't guaranty it would make the drive back home. He said he'd have no problem driving it that far but couldn't guaranty what someone else would do. I agreeded! He didn't even take cash with him, expected the fella to take a check! I told him I could write him a local check and take the one from BIL. Wish I could of bought it myself. Would still have it. :(

  18. I had my 51 Dodge truck brought home in salt and it was a mess. And worse than that I was having work done on my 34 Dodge and the mechanic drove it to my house 30 miles in salt. I was pissed and it took my wife and I hours to get it back.
