Technical British Columbia Out of Province Vintage Vehicle Registration

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Al T, Oct 10, 2023.

  1. It never was the "impossible" because the car was in the Alberta system....I just didn't have the physical registration slip. Because it was an Alberta registered car, I was able to take my insurance for the car and my bill of sale into the Registry and register the car (no out of province safety inspection required).
As mentioned numerous times in this thread, if the car is in the Alberta system, it is registered with the bill of sale and valid insurance.

  2. I can see where my original post was confusing. It was in the Alberta system, it had not been actively registered in many years. Me bad.

What caused this issue in the first place was some bad info from the registry. When I bought the car from my buddy, he stated he had checked and it was active in the Alberta registry. I went to the local registry and was told by one of the ladies there it was in the system but would need an out of province because of how long it had not been actively registered. That was not true. She gave me some bad informaion.

One point of note, is that unlike in the US, in Alberta we do not pay personal property tax annually on vehicles we own. As such, purchasing a vehicle and not registering it (if it's not being driven or a project) is not tax evasion, it's just not necessary.

  3. Glad it worked out. I think you got lucky with who you talked to not requiring you to have the out of province done. I have been told by multiple registries and know multpile people who have had to have it done for vehicles in the system and not currently registered. I even had a guy who bought a used truck off me that was registered have to have a safety done before he could get it registered. Even the guy I use for appraisals told me it was a requirement.

Anything more than 10 years old needs a safety inspection, even my own vehicles if I change insurers. However, if your vehicle is in the registration system and doesn't come up in any other province in Canada since being registered in Alberta, an out of province is not required. Unfortunately not all registries enforce this correctly. We've got an issue with registry agents incorrectly applying the rules in Alberta.

A safety inspection for insurance and an out of province are not the same.

Are you referring to yourself? I can't figure out why you're still on this thread.

  6. Are you sure the inspection requirement wasn’t an insurance requirement for a vehicle older than 10 years old. That does need to be done, whether it’s registered or not. It’s an insurance company requirement, not a registry requirement.

We can be very thankful for that Al.
I can tell you that if you move to British Columbia that you will pay taxes when you register any vehicle you buy new or used.
They get you when you go into the registry to register the vehicle and get your license plates.
This applies to everything that gets registered and gets a license plate new vehicles or even used vehicles and trailers any type of RV etc etc even when purchased from a private individual.
So everything you register is taxed multiple times throughout its lifetime as it moves from owner to owner.
Another reason why BC stands for Bring Cash.
If there’s a way for them to reach deeper into your wallet they will find it.

Yep, my cousin moved there. Vehicle he had owned here for several years was taxed when he registered it there. That makes no sense to me.

  9. Yes it sucks to have to pay tax for everything you register but still lucky it’s an easy process to get things registered there much like Alberta. Unless that has changed in BC since I moved.

ICBC has also changed the process for the value amount you pay tax on to register your vehicle. You used to be able to use the amount you paid for the vehicle that was on the transfer papers, now ICBC uses a black book value to receive the taxes. ICBC felt buyers were purposely submitting a lower purchase price so they could be taxed less. They said they were losing millions a year because of this.

    God I hate ICBC.

WTF? That's dumb because now they will also have to use the black book to pay out owners loss or damage not the purchase price! I had a car written off once... ICBC used an old ad I had posted before when I was desperately trying to get rid of the car for cheap to determine value and another where they gave me the purchase price as a value...which I of course had undervalued ($500) to save the taxes!

    YES!

Not sure how it would work on a project 1940 Ford but on say a 2012 Ram pickup you got a great deal on beware!
