Does anyone have experience with 17" body (24" oal) Brockman Steelpack mufflers on a stock Merc flathead.? I'm wondering if they would be toooo loud.
They are going to sound different depending on placement, but a stock flathead is anything but loud so I'm sure were ever they land it'll sound fine
Brockman steelpacks don't sound a lot different than gl*** unless their internal design has changed recently ... I don't mean this in a bad way - no currently produced steelpack has the sound of a Dougl*** or Porter made 60 years ago.
I'm running 12" (18" overall) Brockman gl*** packs on my stock '51 239" Ford and they are not too loud! Sound really nice and mellow, imo. I tried the 17" and they were too quiet for me. The same 12" Brockmans on my '32's 286" are very loud, so engine condition and modifications make a big difference.
I have 12" Brockman steel on my current coupe build. Here's a pic how they are mounted. The pipes are 1 3/4" dia. And here's how they sound. 59AB Flathead with Isky 1007B cam - 4"crank - .60 over bore
