Yep I'm not too concerned about it, just going to take a closer look at the valve stem Keepers today. I didn't notice it in plain sight but after looking at the pictures and blowing them up looks kind of funny.or maybe I'll forget about it. Luckily all the crate motors that I put in customers cars they don't want the stock covers so I've got a pile of plain Jane small block valve covers with brand new gaskets on them haha

Any chance the spring retainer is bottoming out on the guide?

  5. That wear from the valve stem might be the cause.... I had a Pontiac 316 cu in that had a valve stem wear all the way through the rocker arm (pushed out the keeper, dropped the valve, beat the hell out of the piston! Replaced that rocker and valve and charged on!) but at the time, I never thought to look at the rest of the rocker. But when you think about it, as soon as you wear through the hardness in the valve stem area of the rocker, it is putting a lot of 'skid' loading on the rocker arm, which would translate into the arm trying to bend in the ball/socket area resulting in fatigue. Replace the arm and tango on.
