   Anybody know how the phrase 'broken down' started? I've heard that if a horse drawn wagon's wooden spoke wheel broke some spokes that the wagon would drop down and be immobile thereby being 'broken and down'. Could be.

   Could be . I always heard the expression “a broken down mule “ . Maybe too old to do anymore work.
