It is possible to weld a gas tank safely.

First, I do all work outside with plenty of ventalation. (and away from the cat)

I Don't bother to try and weld a rusted out tank, it won't work.

I drain mine out and then clean out with a good detergent to remove all the gas and drain.
Then I fill the tank up with water. It must be completly full!!

Then I turn it over and place the hole at the very top and refill through the hole displacing ALL the air. I then weld without a chance of an explosion as there is no air/fuel mixture in the tank.

In the case of the tank in question, a small hole would have to be punched or drilled with an air drill to allow the trapped air to escape and for water to be introduced into the tank. After the line is welded, I would then weld the hole.

Disclaimer!! This is not a recommedation for you to weld a tank.
If you follow this procedure and the tank explodes, and kills you, Don't call me back, you have not followed my description carefully! .

I picked a 20 gallon tank 3 years ago for $20 and a 10 gallon tank last year for $10. You just have to look (not at the brand new parts stands).

If you get desperate, I have a few extra Hudson tanks that are in decent shape for not a lot of money. Not sure what rules are on shipping used gas tanks though. It might be hard to get the smell out completely.

I have checked those guys out over the years. Not much for "orphan" cars. They are a top 100 place. Only place for a original tank for cars like this is used or if a specialty supplyer gets a run made.
