  3. Essex coupes make a nice early style rod, but you're on your own for any kind of body panel or patch panel.

Welcome to the club. I got a 28. Is there any interior garnish? The 29 (one year only) had some beautiful pine filigree (sp?) on the gauge panels, door handles, etc. The easiest way to differentiate the years is usually by the belt line ... your might be a 28 but I'm far from an expert since there is so little remaining information on these cars. Yeah, parts are a bitch, but resourcefullness and inventiveness is what hot rodding is all about, right?
And I wouldn't call that a POS ... it looks to be in better shape than mine! But for all practical purposes, you could be taking those pictures in my garage they look so similar.
There is a very active H.E.T. group on classiccars.com. They can hook you up with more information... there's even a "streetrods" forum within their group, so you'll be around people who don't mind cutting the bejesus out of these as long as they get back on the road.
Keep in touch. A friend a few towns over is building a 29 with his grandson and he's come a lot farther along than I have.
What frame is that you've got there? Looks like a good fit for such a relatively big coupe.

Looks like a 29 to me because of the suicide doors...I have 2 28 4 doors and 2 30 2 door coaches both of which don't have suicide doors...I also have a 29 4 door coach which does. These parts are definitley hard to come by. Also if it has the pinecone motife...it's a 29. What kind of parts are you looking for?

Back and roof of that car have a really nice shape. Like a T coupe but not quite. Good score, will make a different kinda hot rod even if it adheres to a standard formula.

I wasn't after the roadster anyway. My neighbor and I have started the metal work, it's amazing how this old steel is workable. The frame is a custom job built for a t-bucket. Scored a 40's front axle to convert for buggy sprung suicide. Not sure on motor or tranny yet, what ever I can find cheap. Really need a decklid, prolly have to make it. I'll get some more pics of progress. The driver door had prolly not been opened in fifty years until last night. The pb blaster is starting to bust stuff loose. Got the front window frame working again too. Off to the garage.....

Will you guys post up some pics of your cars? I can hardly find any pics of these cars on here. Would love to see how the rear valance and trunk lid originally looked. Thanks, Wiley

The only Essex sheetmetal on my truck is the cab, which is a cut-down '27 sedan body. The rest of the truck is 1930 Chevy. The original "piano hinge" door hinges were replaced with Chevy ones, but they were factory suicide doors.

I think it is a 27 or 26 or maybe even 25. I had a 27 2door sedan and this looks much like it. The outside handles on the earlier cars are almost identical to the Model T and 28-29 Closed A pickups and the same handle is used inside and outside. The Model A Ford door handles work fine and the window handles too.

It's most likely 27-29. 25's and 26's were even more square. This is a 25...

Welcome to my world - I've had many owners of Essex (including some of you cats) tell me my car is one year or another, but I've yet to get a definitive answer. I think it's a 28 because that's what I've heard the most, but some dudes think it's a 25, 26 or 27.
Is there a formula for knowing for sure? Perley (here on the HAMB) has been told the easiest way to tell is by the belt line... like I think 29 had a thick and a thin belt line and 28 and 30 had the one thin line like yours and mine. SHit I dont know, but I sure want to learn more.
I definitely need a deck lid too, so if you end up making one before I do, I'd love to get some tips on how you pull it off.

    Look familiar?
