Buddys pushin the "storage" limit way too far, what to do???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 29EHV8, May 26, 2005.

  1. As some/most of you know I have my own shop building rods/kustoms.
I have some friends that want cars built but won't committ.
You know the type, they see you driving your hot rod and want one too.
So they buy some parts and ask,"can you build me a car?"
So they bring a bunch of parts to your shop and leave em there.
Not buckin up for you to get started.
    The parts just sit there.
    Well I've had it.
I have a couple of friends who have done this.
One guy has a ton of **** at my shop.
Body, frame, diffs, front ends,wheels,tires,55 olds mill/trans(sitting where my new compressor supposed to go last year!)
I've asked him to come and get the **** for over a year now.
Some of the stuffs been in my shop for over 2.5 years.
Well I got a message from my landlord of my shop asking if I could clean it up around my shop by June 1st.
I said of course I could.
I've been pushing it having two derelict rods sitting outside and **** piled all over em.
So I phone my friends whos **** I'm "storing" and ask em to come get their **** before I go to the swapmeet tomorrow.
    Well none of em showed.
So should I just load up their **** and sell it at the swap?
Or should I phone em for the umpteenth time and TELL em to get it outa here?
Which we all know isn't going to happen!
Hell,I didn't even ask em to help me clean my shop?!......Shiny

  2. If they are your friends just pack it up and deliver it to their door. With a smile of course.

    obviously not "good"friends.
swap meet time and tell 'em the money you sell the stuff for you're keeping for storage payment.
and if it were me, i'd sell the **** cheap!
on the other hand, you could always load the stuff up and drop it in their frt yard..

Are they GOOD friends, or are they just aquantinces(sp)?

Write up a bill for storage fees, and tell them to pay the fees or the parts get sold to cover storage costs.

I'd be happy to "remove the parts" free of charge:D

Two options, both already presented. If you're really that ****in nice, load up the stuff and deliver it to your buddies house. If you're not quite that nice, load it up and take it to the swap meet, sell it and give them half the coin.

If however, you're more like me, sell it for whatever you can get, pocket it, and mention you asked nice.

    Had almost the same problem.

Final solution; sent the guy a registered letter (double registered is even better) and gave him X days to come and collect ALL his stuff.

Letter stated, "If stuff was not moved by mid-night the final day; it would be sold at public auction (no reserves) and the proceeds would be kept to cover the costs of the auction and the storage."

Didn't make any money, (other than the storage fee) but sucessfully bid on a couple of parts (cheap!) that I wanted! All legal.

(no he didn't take me seriously!)

  10. On the other hand, I was on the recieving end of this once. I lost a fully rebuilt transmission while in the middle of a divorce. The guy had been paid $650 cash in fully to rebuild it. Later on I had returned it because I broke the input shaft bearing retainer. That was a $60 item and I gave him $20 and then spent 18 months ending a marriage. When I called him after 18 months he siad he had thrown it out. Translation: He sold it.

I'm still bothered by that one. Certainly there are two sides to these things.

However your situation is more dire. Just dump it on their lawn but make sure you slow down to about 25 mph when you do it.:D

Give em ONE last warning. Then sell what you can on the hamb, then swap meet the rest!

  13. Give ya $100 for the Olds mill!

**** em, they arent your true friends, Since it is old used parts, there probably isnt a paper trail. Call them up and tell them you arre vending at teh swap and that you think it will be a good one. They should go, might be some things they might want to buy. Then take their stuff to the swap, start sellin your own stuff and wait for tehm to see their stuff in your space!:D Make the ***holes buy it back for the storage fee then tell them to take the **** home ASAP:cool:

    What Nads said.

You want to be a businessman, start acting like one.

Real friends don't take advantage of each other, unless they're queer.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

If they are good friends and really don't think you are serious about selling the stuff or throwing it away, and you want to stay friends, haul the stuff to a "you do it youself" storage place, rent one stall for one month, and stuff all their stuff in there, pull down the door, put a padlock on it, and send the key and the rental agreement and the p***word to get into the facility to your "friends", and say: "You're on your own now. You can keep paying the storage place for as many months as you like because I sure as hell am not going to pay the continuing storage fees, but if you don't pay and the storage place sends me a legal notice that they are going to auction off the contents on such and such a date due to non payment of the rent, I'm going to let them. And no, I will not be able to help you move all of your stuff out of the storage stall, and if you don't currently have any place to store it, that's your problem, not mine."

    Shiny,

I like Digger Dave's advice. Once you've sent them a registered letter, you have a legal do***ent that will cover your ***. It would be fun to play tough guy and sell thier stuff without a written warning, but you've got to be carefull -- people are crazy and thier lawyers are crazier.

Shiny, I would give them one more call and be clear that if the parts are not picked up in one week (by the following Sun) that you are taking ownership and will be selling the stuff. Let them know you have given them previous request and you need the room and your landlord is complaining and you are not going to loose your business over it. If they truly want the stuff and are friends they will understand

Dude, you have to stand up for yourself sometimes even if it is unpleasant or they will keep pushing.

Now one of these guys isnt the one that has my headlight bezels,, if so keep the **** until you get them..... because I need them.

**** delivering the parts to their houses. You are 'NOT' a delivery man. It's not your job to load it up for them, either. You have given them enough notice to come get their ****. It's yours now. Do with it what you want. If they have ignored you this long, they are not 'real' friends.

We had a similar problem back in the day when we were still building cars.....

Send a registered letter saying that they have X amount of days to pick up their **** and that if they don't pick it up in that time period, it is gone. I know its ****py, but you might want to check with a lawyer up there to see what their legal rights are. It would be a ***** for you to get sued / arrested because of some BS loophole.

    Hope this helps.

I once had to sue a guy to get my stuff back.

I would suggest going with the above quoted route. If they don't pick it up post it here. If you explain the situation to your landlord he should be willing to give you a little extra time if you do it the right way.

AND TOLD THEM HONESTLY THAT YOU NEEDED TO CLEAN THE PLACE UP
THEN SELL THE STUFF THATS IN YOUR WAY

Yea, do it that way. Also tell the landlord what's going on so he knows whats up.

This is exactly why I don't let any one bring anything to my shop with out the cash to do what they want done. My line is: "I don't have room to store your stuff. My insurance doesn't cover your stuff unless I'm working on it, and I can't work on it until you have the money. I gotta pay my bills too. You just keep it at your place and when you have the money, then bring it by and I will get it done asap. I like to get things in, get them done and have them paid for and gone as quick as I can, that way I don't have to worry about your things getting damaged or come up missing. Keeps every one happy." When they come by with the stuff, I tell them it will be done on a certain day and I will need it picked up and paid for then, so I can get on the next job.

I also have a sign posted that says "Any thing left over 30 days will be sold for the bill against it" There is another sign that says "Any thing here more then 7 days after compleation will be charged a storage fee of $20 per day"
I don't have a problem with "free" storage. Gene

    Obviously,being NICE doesn't work.
    Been there,done that.

    Tell him:
"All your treasures that you've been slowly collecting over the last few years, that I've been storing for free, won't be here Monday.
    PERIOD.
If you want to keep this stuff, fine. But you can't keep it here.
You will move all of it before then.
If I have to move it,you won't see it again."

Delivering the stuff to his place, for him, sounds like too much work,
and he won't like it anyway.

Just so happens I've got some of his twin brothers ****
sitting in my ba*****t,I wrote the date on it when it arrived.
    Apr '95.

The Registered Letter idea sounds good.

Just be prepared to pull the trigger.
