Hello all, I always wanted to Rod out a bug, but dont have a lot of funds. How does someone lower one of these? Also, does anyone have any ideas on this project? I would love to have this for the Hunter Car Pile Up.

  4. That's a pretty rare car, don't screw it up to much. Looks like a 56 or 57. Check this site out. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/ Ask the VW folks before you screw it up. VW's aren't to popular here.

Gut it and put a turbonique drag axle under it. Then go to the local hardware store n panel paint it with spray bombs. Then procede to die on the maden voyage.

Start by putting the correct tailights and front blinkers on it.

To be honest, I dont know what it would sell for. The interior is PERFECT condition. I wasn't going to do anything really crazy, just lower it alittle.

How many MILLION Beetles did they make ?
"Don't cut it up!" Gimme a ****ing break.
Posie has it right:"Anyone can Restore a car, takes a real man to cut one up".

It's his car,he can do whatever he wants with it.
If it was historically significant,it would be in a museum already.
    -----------------------

The rears are lowered by reindexing the arms on the torsion bars.
Fronts are usually lowered with weld in adjusters,or by cutting, rotating, and rewelding the conter of each torsion tube.

    Do a search on Volksrods.com

Cash in and build an American made hot rod.

That bug's really nice and worth lots of money.
I don't even like bugs, but don't **** it up, it's cooler the way it is. Throw it on the auction site.

Sell it and you'll have the funds for an old ford, then **** that up instead, it's more fun. And will be worth something when you're finished.

Oh yeah, get rid of those taillights. Quick, before someone sees them.

So if I do decide to part with the bug, what do you all think its worth? Granted, its worth to whomever will pay, but I am not for sure.

Any bug shop should have a "SelectaDrop" front end. The is a front end with adjustable torsion bars. To lower the rear, you can "clock" the rear torsion bars.

If all you want to do is lower it a bit, then a set of weld-in adjusters for the front end should run you less than $100.00. The rear is just a matter of dis***embly and re-indexing the torsions. You'll want to replace the shocks with stiffer, shorter models... maybe another $250.00 or less.

If that's too high-buck, pull the front torsion bars out of the beam and ditch a couple of the thin ones. It's not the reccommended method, but it works. Alternately, cut the center sections out of one or both of the tubes of the beam, and reweld them in after you rotate them a few degrees... figure out how many degrees difference there is between the trailing arms at stock ride-height and how low you want to go... drop some sandbags in the spare tire well if you need to for measurement purposes. This is basically the same as adding adjusters, but it without the adjustability.

  22. For every 1/8" you turn the front torsion bars, the car will go down 1" Sell it and build something else.

Might be worth 4500 dollars. I use to make z-plates for the rear swingaxle, lowers it 1 1/2 inches. Any more than that and theres too much camber. Lower a i.r.s. frame instead.

dont "rod" that bug out. a vw has its own tradition, dont ruin it by trying to turn it into something it isn't.

thats a nice looking car. check out http://www.dkpcarclub.com/ for some original cal look influence...

and, yeah, i like traditional cal-look vws-- got into them in the 80's as a teen.... back when most folks were styling mullets with turquoise mini trucks or macho man camaros.

I would ask 8-10 but they're popular out here in Southern California, especially oval windows, check your local listings to see what they've going for, if you go with American metal your going to end up paying up the *** for a peice of **** anyway.. so do whatever makes you happy dude.

I can't believe you've been here since Nov 06 and still had the nerve to start this thread, but what I REALLY can't believe is the warm reception it received! Somethin's fishy here, it's all a joke right?

Cal Look Bugs are nice looking cars. You'll get the $8500 on it if you pop it on Ebay. Nice oval windows are hard to come by.
