Close enough outcome it makes you wonder if playing moonshiner and using a bootleg turn at the far end would have made the difference.

I liked the part where the plane blew by at the beginning!

Reminds me of a TV movie from the late 70's? Burgess Meridith and Lee Majors I think. Sabre Jet vs an open top racecar from the 60's. Ferarri maybe? Anyone remember that? I'm gonna have to do a search now! :)

Interesting thing is I remember it being a race over obtaining the last fuel on earth or something like that. Will it come to that? Gas is pretty darn high already and it's finite.

    Found it!

A phantom jet must catch and destroy the last car left on earth.
The oil finally ran out... and somewhere in the future, the chase has begun.
In a future United States, the only transport available to an individual is public transportation. Predicated on an ***ertion that "the oil has run out", an increasingly totalitarian central government has ordered all personal vehicles be impounded by law. One man, a former race car driver, yearns again for his ability to choose his own roads and destiny. He re***embles his race car hidden from confi****ion, and sets out for "Free California" which has broken away from the new regime, aided by a young technically savvy teen who feels alienated from this "social" society. Agents of the new government must stop this man at any cost to destroy the symbology he represents, and the instability that such a desire for personal autonomy could mean to the society. An old Korean War veteran and his F-86 Sabre jet are called into service to chase down this dangerous man, and end his flouting of the will of the state. In the words of one of the government agents, "People going where they want to, where they want to. This could set us back to the 1980s." Written by AGC

It is the future. Evil fascists have forced everyone to recycle and drive electric cars, and have oppressed all those poor people who want to drive Ferraris and smoke cigarettes. Hero Lee Majors, an ex-racing car driver, decides to make a statement by pulling out his old race car and driving cross-country at 150 mph (he siphons gas from old gas station pumps). Taking along a young computer hacker, he drives for the Holy Land the Free State of California! Of course, the Powers That Be try to eliminate him by hiring Burgess Meredith to shoot him down with a fighter jet, which, too, are virtually extinct

That clip is from a show on BBC America. Mondays at 9 or 10pm.

Do any of you guys actually watch Top Gear? Even though it is totally not the kinds of cars I am into I have to watch it every week. It's a great show!

Cool video, I got no sound. That sounds like a fun bad movie. The plane on the box looks like an f-4, not an f-86, tho.

All my car buddies are hooked on Top Gear - those guys are nuts. Kind of like a cross between Jack*** and Motor Trend TV. If you have never watched it give it a try Monday nights 8-pm to ??? BBC America.

I think the car would have won but on the way down the jet seemed to start leveling out pretty high and kind of cut the "corner" so to speak.

I agree it was a little high I thought when I saw it... I expected it to be low on the ground. The Bugatti may have got some recoil off the jet if it had been really low though.

With the speed the Bug was making near the start/finish line, any jet wash at all and the driver could have probably kissed his you know what goodbye, not to mention the possibility of the plane overshooting the planned level off and splatting into the deck. Certainly not worth the risk trying place them closer together for what was in the end just a glorified photo op. I'm sure the whole stunt was planned with great care including the final level out.

  20. Awesome! I kind lean to the "shiner" turnaround at the end of the strip too, but then we were'nt there. Richard Hammond is probably a more experienced driver than any of us here, so who knows? Anyone see his high speed crash a year or so back?
