So I need to add a spacer to my rear leaf spring to raise the body. I have to get some longer bolts as there is not enough threads to get the space I need. Currently am using 4x 1/2-20 Grade 8 bolts. Since it is a buggy spring, you can see the shaft of the bolt pretty clearly. Would it be so bad if I wanted to use Stainless Steel bolts so that I can buff them? 18-8 or 316? Or would it be better to just get new grade 8 bolts and have them chrome plated? Would that compromise the strength? These are 4x critical bolts, and I want to make sure I have the strength I need. Opinions? Suggestions? Thanks! Josh
There will be no twist,or pulling. Just clamping force. You will be fine with stainless...... But- There is a difference with the mentioned above.
Check with your bolt supplier, some stainless bolts have only grade 2 tensile strength. I imagine you will be alright as they are 1/2 inch?
I have a LOT of polished SS bolts.. Lots of anti-seize everywhere. I just love the look of polished Stainless, and I can get these 4 bolts for a pretty damn good price. Just wanted to make sure its a good idea to use SS on a high torque application
