I have a 455 motor in a Buick 48 Led Sled, the bores are worn I have a set of Badger P528 +30 pistons, they are cast don't look like Hypertecs, any know the clearance these need?, Im thinking 2.5" thou? any one know? Thank you ( Im in the UK looked everyware for the info'!)
I'd say you're about correct. .002-.0025" would be my best guess too. I'll see if I can find a spec. Sealed Power 392AP-030 crosses and is a plain cast piston. Minimum clearance spec .0015" but that is tighter than I like to do. I'd go .002" for sure and a few tenths more won't hurt especially in that big bore.
Great, thanks for that, Hypertecs would be difficult to cut so using a hacksaw blade some place out of the way you could tell if they are just plain cast?
I suppose, but Badgers of that vintage should pre-date hypereutectic offerings. 99pct sure they're plain cast.
Yeah didn't think about the age of the badger pistons, that's why nothing comes up on Google etc...thanks
30 years ago we used alot of Badger pistons for stock rebuilds, they were generally standard cast, but not all. I will look and see if we still have a catalog and post any info. John Woolfe Racing in Bedford, England lists many NOS Badgers for sale, perhaps they have a catalog and could check for you.
The catalog is long gone , my machinist remembers those pistons originally made by Ertel, then Badger, as almost always hypereutectic cast as he would use a larger end gap, he suggested using the current Silvolite instructions as a guide for clearances.
