There is a good book by ( I think) Mike Dove about hotrodding a Buick engine. If you can't find it I'll check on the title tonight when I get home. It was written using Jim Burek from PAE Enterprise and Poston as references.

  5. If you're just doing a rebuild or a mild hopup use a Motor's Manual and follow stock specs.

Stay away from overly large bearing clearances for a street driven engine.
Stock clearances are best for the street.

The guys on the Buick board are very helpful - go here: http://www.v8buick.com/

v8buick.com is a good start. Jim Weise and the fellas there really know the 455 inside and out.

I did grab a decent book from Jim Burek's PAE site, who's another Buick honcho (he also posts occasionally over there).

    http://www.paeenterprises.com/index.html

"Building the Buick Performance Engine Book, by Steven L. Dove. A complete guide to building the Buick engine, including a complete start to finish 455 engine rebuild." Burek lists it for $25.

Also available here, but for some ridiculous reason, they list it at $85!!

There's also a few tips here and there on Burek's site. Might be a little on Weise's site, too.

  7. There is also TA Performance, they are Buick specialists and I am sure they have some info or literature that would help you out.

Thanks for the replies. I have not signed up at the buick site yet and would hate to sign up and just start asking questions which is why i asked here first. I am for sure going to sign up on that site though.

yeah I am just going with a stock/mild build on the engine.

Lotus, you can't go wrong by going to V8 Buick as they're a great bunch of guys who pride themselves in helping other Buick guys. You can ask here too if you want as I used to be a moderator on V8 Buick.....
C9 is right on about the clearances, I keep my mains at .0015"- .002" and rods at .002" if at all possible for street engines. Makes all the difference with oil pressure.

  10. I have the Dove book; pretty good stuff for a Buick novice, though I would suggest having a Motor or Chilton's manual too as the Dove book doesn't have everything. As mentioned, he worked with those two places...so he refers very little to TA Performance.... or Kenne-Bell (which I believe is no longer in the Buick game, but were the major players at one time). TA makes a lot of hard-core Buick parts, though I know of one major engine builder who has found some quality issues with their reciprocating kits.
