Buick 55 special with powersteering

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by dutch deuce, Jul 22, 2009.

  1. I got a question for a friend of mine.
He has a 1955 Buick special with the stock nailhead and dynaflow.
He now can buy a complete powersteering set-up from a 1954 Buick Super.

His question is, does it fit without to much troubles ??

    Thanks Hennie

call a Buick collector's club (look in Hemmings) or check the interchange manuals at an older wrecking yard. As an alternative, he can take pictures of how the 54 stuff mounts up and look to see if his engine has proper mounting holes/places, etc, don't forget that you'll need EVERYTHING that is different from his (under the ***umption that the swap is as easy as he wants it to be).

The column from the Super is longer then the Special. The 54 had the transmission detents in the column for the shifter, the 55 had the detents in the transmission, if my memory serves me correctly. I learned this trying to put a 55 Super PS column in a 54 Special

As long as you keep the column from your car the power steering box should interchange with no problem.

The steering shaft is part of the PS unit, no rag joint until 56 in Buicks. So the shaft would have to be shortened.
