  1. Were trying to ID this engine in a 67 Le Sabre Custom convertible 400.I can't find any info that tells me that the 400 option menas its a 400 CID.they made only 4,624 converts they came with 340s standard.I check another place and they showed a 430 CID as an option in that year.I read the casting numbers and got 1381621M I can't find that number listed on the web for Buicks anywhere.????!!! Anyone know what the hell it is??

Looks like a 340 to me, my father has a 66 LeSabre with a 340 in it, and it looks to be the same. I am thinking so, due to the valve covers, and the room between the firewall and the back of the engine. Those valve covers are 300c.i. or 340c.i. only, if I am not mistaken. The "400" is refering to the transmission. -Joe

My Buick book doesn't list a LeSabre 400. The 400 engine is a bored & stroked 340 for the GS model only. Only lists the 340 for LeSabre. This doesn't mean someone couldn't swap one in, though. Sorry, I don't know enough about them to ID that engine in the pic.

Later 350 Buicks came with those same covers, too. A 430 will have a taller deck height than a 340.

So, if the deck height is taller than a 340, it's probably a 430...

    ...and if it's shorter than a 430, it's likely a 340!

(I gotta swear off of Abbott & Costello!!! [IMG])

  6. Figured it out its the A9 option car-- LeSabre 400 high performance Group(A7 with 3 speed Super Turbine Transmission and specific ornamentation) (The A7 was the High Performance V8 340 with 4 barrel carb

If you are gonna part it out, my old man could use the windshield washer jug, his is broken...PM me if that is your intentions with the car, and gimme a price.

    Thanks -Joe

  8. Actually the car just got a new top and new paint and the engine is being detailed as we speak...The car will be for sale though it runs like a mofo!!!

  13. Look on top of the bellhousing, about in the center.
You'll see a casting number with three numbers about 1" tall.
The cast numbers will say 430 or 455.

There is a 400 CID engine in this block size, but I haven't seen one of those so don't know if the cast numbers are on them or not.

Since the numbers are in the valley area top of the bellhousing many times they are hidden by grease and dirt.

I don't know if the 350 Buicks have these cast numbers on the bellhousing or not.

There are also some cast numbers just above the starter, cast into the side of the block, numbers are 1/2 - 3/4" tall and will say 430-455.
These numbers may be upside down, don't remember for sure.
