I used the Search function, but I couldn't an answer to my question. I was on a wrecking yard recon mission in L.A. a few days ago, and I found a '66 Riviera with a complete set of front brakes. I am slowly collecting parts for a future project, and Buick front brakes are on the list. So my question is: Are there certain years of Buick front brakes that are more desirable than others? Are the '66-style brakes worth grabbing, or are the earlier versions more desirable? Is it a wise move to grab everything off of the spindle, or just the drums? I have never messed with these brakes before, so I apologize for all the questions.
The drums are definitely worth having. The 45 fin are a little more desirable as they're the earlier drum and a little more "cl***ic" looking, but the 90 fin are the same dimensions and I know of guys that actually like the look better. I have seen guys adapt the backing plates to work but it's a pain and probably easier to just use ford backing plates and hubs. I personally would grab the drums if they're cheap.
As Dred stated they are 90 fin drums, still desirable and can be used. The 45 fin are the most desirable, but the difference is only appearance, the drums and brakes are basically the same. To use the Buick backing paltes you weill need to weld and modify the backing plate. Easier and more common to use the Ford backing plate. You still need to adapt the hub for the spindle, most use the Ford hub and Buick drum. You can get bearing adapter spacers to use the Buick hub.
Thanks for the responses. That's great info. I think I'm grab 'em and rat-hole them for later. They'll look perfect on my 2004 Pontiac Aztek "traditional" rat-rod g***er project. Just kidding..........................
