I have a 1951 Chevy with a ruined six and stock running gear. I own a 1963 Buick engine and trans (401 & Dynaflow) Has anyone got any idea how hard this swap would be? I am tired of seeing SBC engines in these cars. I already have the open drive rearend for this swap. Thanks in advance. George
Well the nailhead is longer than the sbc, so I'm not sure if you will have to move the raidiator to the other side of the support or not. I know with my 53 Chevy and a 327 I had to use the short water pump and there wasn't much room in front or back. I think it can be done, it just depends on your skills. I think it would be cool myself. One of my favorite swaps I ever saw was a 53/54 Chevy with a Pontiac OHV 6...had to do a double take on that one! Bill
The steering will be a problem and something will have to move there. The 53 is a tight fit for a SBC around the box. You can shift the engine a bit right if necessary, but I'd go for it anyway-that would be a great combination.
Somewhere in one of the little Car Crafts or Rod & Customs is an article detailing this very swap. It'll probably only take me a few months to find it.
In the 60's it used to be a commen swap in 55-56 Chevies. in earlier cars you will need a rear sump pan and possably have starter/steering interfearance. Good luck you can do it.
