I am currently building a 401 Buick Nailhead for a future project. I have acquired polished aluminum valve covers, valley cover and spark plug wire covers. I have just received my long awaited aluminum four barrel intake manifold from TA Performance. My question; should I leave it raw, paint it to match the heads and block. If I paint the manifold the effect will be subdued. If I polish the manifold the if follows that I should polish the front cover and water pump. I am concerned that polishing the manifold will be too much sparkle in a traditional hot rod (32 three window highboy). I'm 81 and this is my last hot rod and I want to do it right as I don't think I will get a second chance. Would you go for the glitter or tone it down?
I've always painted my aftermarket intake manifolds engine color....but as said "your car" make yourself proud.
I have had a couple powder coated silver and like the way that looks. It's much easier to keep up, as well.
My preference depends on the application. My 401 is going in a closed hood car, so fully painted is my choice. An open hood car would have more bling. Your car, your choice. A polished manifold without a protective coating would need constant maintenance. Powder coating (whether clear or color) will keep it shiny.
On my 401 I had all those alloy bits water bead blasted. The bloke that does it puts something in the water so that oil stains and such do not go into the alloy and can be removed with detergent and a scrubbing brush. The finish is soft, subdued and I think a bit different instead of the bling. Engine is painted satin black and the headers are ceramic coated satin black.
