    I have a Buick nailhead that came out of a 57 Buick Century but its believed to not be the original engine in the car.
    I need help in finding out if its a 364 or a 401. The casting # on the heads are 1172889. Are there any other tell tale signs of which this engine might be?
    Thanks in advance for the help.

    59-60 364/401

    Need the casting # from in front of the valley cover to be sure which one it is.
    suffix should be like
    3F =1959 364 or

    4F =1959 401 or

    3G =1960 364 or

    4G =1960 401

    The 57 364 had a cast iron timing cover and all 401's had an aluminum cover. This will be a clue but 364's after 58 had aluminum covers as well but it could be quick answer for you. Good Luck
