Buick portholes (lest i think thats what they are called) where can i get some? thanks in advance bernard
they are on ebay pretty often,,i like the 56's best,,nice oval shape,,the earlier ones are more round....57's are fake portholes and are teardrop shaped (kinda cool too)....someone sells repros too on ebay (pretty pricey though)
I see about a dozen late-model NON-Buicks a day with those glued on. So tacky. I'm gonna buy a Buick and SHAVE the portholes.
These are 1953, I replaced mine with repops $253. included shipping. I am going to sell the old ones, I was going to get them powder coated but got impatient just got these. Nice guy willing to answer questions. Bobs Automobilia 805 434-2963 http://www.bobsautomobilia.com
I loved the buick Ex ports that were ovel but kind of long best too! I had 6 of them kind mounted back word in my custom Henry J hood like intake ports Spaced out like this; A A A A A A Can't get them to show one space wider each rowe back as I had them, but ya get the idea?
lol Put a fart cannon on it, along with steelies up front with 18"+ alloys in the back, an erector set wing, and chrome taillights, and you're SO the MAN!
I have 49's my 48 Ford coupe got them on ebay good price just have to wait until you find the one's you want.
The early 49 Buick Ventiports were actually ducted into the engine compartment to exhaust hot air. Don't know if they really helped much though.
Ain't that the truth, I cringe when I see 'em now. I'm trying to recall the last fad that reached ridiculous levels before the magnetic ribbons. Was it the on-board signs?
Cars, Inc. in New Jersey has 54-55-56 new reproductions. They have a website.. http://www.buick-parts.com/. I bought these 54's from them. They are the real thing, not stick-ons. You can buy the cheapo stick-ons at Pep Boys.
Yea, the "Baby on board" signs were the thing 5-7 years ago. Before that it was the "garfield" doll suction-cupped to the windows, and prior to that, the green pine tree air freshners dangling from the rear-view and steering wheel covers... Barf!
Used to be, when they were real Buick portholes added to a custom. Now every *** with a late-model FWD ****box is gluing on the Auto-Zone specials.
man i think they look good and tons of cars but im not going to go buy some stick on ******** i'll actully but the work in to make them real
One of the fads before the current stick-on fake ports was vinyl lettering on the windows (regardless of message). Unfortunately, that fad hasn't faded away, yet. My guess is the next one might be stick-on "Hybrid" badges. It might be good for a one-time chuckle for this oldie: My car's a hybrid — it burns gas and rubber (but still a stupid fad).
I have repeated this story before but whenever I see the phrase "Buick portholes" I think of it. Alan Sherman, a comedian from the 60s wrote a story for ******* magazine in which he relates that as a teen he was fascinated with the Buick portholes and wrote a letter to the Buick people asking what exactly they were supposed to be called. Someone at Buick must have figured out they were answering a kid and in their reply they said the proper term was "Stratocruiser Portovents". **** like that still cracks me up.
Buick called them "Ventiports" but most everybody else calls them portholes. These are the '53 Buick oval holes in the splash apron on my A coupe. There's a guy in Florida that sells nice repops on eBay for about $250/set. The chrome louver inserts are vintage NOS Warshawsky dress-up pieces. I've got another set of six for (I think) '56 Buicks.
Issue #30, Nov.2008, Ol' Skool Rodz magazine has a article about installing Buick Ventiports or portholes.
