I just got my '53 Buick's lever shocks rebuilt from a Buick only vendor...they're the ones that double as an upper control arm. Anyway, to rebuild these things you have to break the weld apart in the middle of the arm and reweld it when you're done. Well, the rebuilder's weld broke. It's not a safety issue because the upper pin at the spindle and the shock are holding them together. I'd rather not take the thing off and send it back, so (finally) to my question. Anything wrong with me hitting the thing with my MIG around where it should be welded? I'll still call and mention the problem to the rebuilder, so don't worry about that... Thanks for any input...
Aaron65, i have a 51 Buick myself, i just had my shock/upper a-arm thread retapped because of a bent screw, other issue. what im getting at is that i am no expert but, if you clean off all the oil and can get a good weld in there, id say go for it, but before you do so contact the guys that rebuilt it because if they care about there reputation, they will want to pay for shipping and repair their weld and make it right and make sure you will do business with them again. my 2 cents.
Well, they offered to ship it back to the rebuilder and have them fix it...so that's cool...but for time's sake I still may throw a weld in there myself...thanks!
