does anyone know anything about buick steering boxes? my wifes 54' buick century is really hard to turn. We alyays thought it was just because it is a big old car with out power steering untill i drove my buddys 53' buick and it steered so much easier. anyone have any suggestions on how i can make it easier to steer w/out going to power before she turns into "arnold govenator"!!!

  2. The obvious things like tire pressure, tire size, front end alignment first, Then check lube in the box, its adjustment, and see how much free play is in the front end. A bunch of sloppy front end parts will take steering action away by moving up and down intead of side to side. Look for bent parts. Get an old Motors manual, it should say how to overhaul the box.
I had an old Ford that was a bear to steer, i'm not Arnold but I'm no wimp. I had to stand up to steer it with both arms pulling as hard as I could. The lube had solidified and was not greasing anything. The worm gear was grated up and the balls were shot...
