Technical Buick tail lights on a '41-'48 Ford

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by RICH B, Sep 3, 2013.

  1. Been looking at pictures for a while, gone somewhat thru Rick Hovings place, watched for cars at events, etc; but have not seen any '41-'48 Fords with '50-'52 Buick tail lights.

There may be some; but almost every picture of these years of Fords are front views.

I have seen some with the stock '42-'48 lights frenched; but most of those
are closer to stock height and think I would like to mount my Buick lights lower.

I would really like to see some pictures to get a idea on how they may look. So I am wondering is anyone has any pictures or links they could post.

I would think these lights would probably have been used as a custom light on these cars, maybe I'm wrong.

I am certain I have at least one photo of a '41-'48 Ford with '50-52 Buick taillights frenched in among all my early '50s kustom car books and magazines, but I don't know when I'll have time to look through them and find 'em. So if you want to SEE them it'll be a while, but if you just want to know if it was ever done the answer is yes.

  3. Thanks, yes am trying to get a feel for location height wise, pretty much know where I would like them; but picture to confirm the appearance would help. I remember the Buick lights on the first custom (a '49 or '50 Merc) I saw in "real life" parked on a side street when I was a kid and always thought I would like to use some someday, if I ever had an car where they would be appropriate.

Not a Ford (obviously), but the neatly frenched lenses on Tony Cardoza's Chevy are as nice as any I've seen. (Most seem to get used horizontally on Model A's.)

The photo I'm remembering has them sideways (horizontal), tunneled slightly out from the rear fenders. I'll try to go digging through my old books and magazines tonight to find it for you, Rich.

These are ‘52 Olds taillights on the Harold Dornes ‘46 Ford coupe. From the “East vs West Showdown” cartech book.

  7. I was planning on horizontal, somewhere around the height that the Olds lights are in the picture side_valve posted. I don't want to tunnel them; but plan to french them similar to what Yaril did on his shoebox, seems a little more old style to me.

Sorry, Rich, I forgot to find that photo! I'll look tonight. The one I have in my head is similar to what you are describing.

Well I looked through several of my old custom books and magazines last night and could not find the photo I was looking for. It's possible I saw it in someone else's magazine or in a borrowed book. (My local library has original copies of a couple of the Barris books!)

But I know for sure it looked a lot like this photo I stole from Rikster's site, only with Buick lenses laid horizontal:

  10. If you go to Rikster's (AKA Rik Hoving) Fotki site and look under 46-48 ford pics album, then go to page 2 under image 116 is a pic of a 46-48 red sedan that has the buick tail lights mounted horizontal. If you send me a PM with your email address I can send you a pic of the image.
    Thanks
    Matt
