Technical Building a 1951 Buick 263 Engine

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by firstinsteele, Mar 8, 2016.

  1. Guys and Gals, I am in the process of "building" a 263 to put into my '50 to replace the 248. This is a driver, not a racer. Will I get on it once in awhile? What do you THINK?
Block and head are in the machine shop. Boring as much as the block will allow. Head will be reworked with larger valves. Modern pistons and rings.
Now comes the CAM. This engine came with Hydraulic lifters. Therefor the cam is designed for same. So I think I will stay with Hyd. But, how about Hyd roller lifters? Let me say here that I have rebuilt, overhauled, replaced engines most of my life. This is my FIRST modified, hopped up, hot+++++ engine.
So with all that has been said, opinions please. Especially if YOU have used them.

If I remember right your 263 gets it's oil for the hydraulic lifters different the oil comes down from the rocker arms to the lifters through a hollow push rod. You are not going to find a hydraulic roller lifter that works that way.

  3. Now that is the kind of info I am looking for. Thank you.

On the 263 there is an oiler tube at the back of the head. Take the rocker are assy completely apart and clean out every little hole.
