Will be building a new Blown engine. 3.312, 4-1/8 Scat stroker crank, running 5-6 lbs of boost.

Can’t find any Ross metric ring pistons in the size needed. Talked with Ross today and they have forgings done, but machining won’t be done for 6-8 weeks. Talked with Scat and they are now making their own forged pistons Icon brand (part: IC626.std). The pistons are forged 4032 alloy with ductile rings, 1/16, 1/16, 3/16. Ross uses 2816 alloy with 1.5, 1.5, 3mm rings; moly coated top ring.

    3/16 oil ring seems big

Anybody have any experience with ICON Premium pistons and rings, particularly with 5-6 lbs boost.

  2. That would be a 284 cubic inch engine. ;)

I like the metric rings . . . much better quality than the typical Grant/Hastings rings we used to run. If it were mine, I'd check with Icon directly and see if they offer the pistons with a metric ring package.

I’ve always made sure what ring packages were available before ordering pistons. I’ve bought Ross, Arias, Venolia, CP, JE Wisco…all said the same thing.

  4. Yep! I find the rings I want to run FIRST - then I order my pistons to match. Given that the best rings today (for our small bores) come in metric sizes - this is ALL the more important. I recently bored two blocks for metric rings (85mm) - pistons will be made by Ross to spec. Also, I exactly determine the compression height needed for my .040 quench - rarely is it a "stocking" height. Get the exact right pistons - they don't cost much more.

You find metric on inc dimension rings from many ring manufacurer production. Metric 1,5mm crooves easy to make 1/16" (1,5875mm). Ross, Je, Icons.... Today all pistons are good quality. OK, if You use 100% Nitro or Methanol racing use, need to be sure that there is enough material top and between top and 1st ring. If cylinder pressure very very high, piston top or top edge can "dip".

I have basic 286cid engine + italmeccanica 4000 + potvin 400+ ..... nearly 300hp in dyno. Have drive over 7000miles w/o any problems. OK, good oil is very important "insurance" too... I use only Kendall Green Racing.
Not for sale in shops. They made it 200litre barrel size and Finland Kendall Import company is repack it 20litre (+5gal) can. Very much zinc...

If You make supercharger engine, its good that You buy +.005 size rings and grind those one by one.
Or can use capless rings too
